SARS-CoV-2 receptor binding domain radio-probe: a non-invasive approach for angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 mapping in mice

Dan Li et al.

Summary: The spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 interacts with human respiratory epithelial cells' angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), leading to infection. Low-dose radiation has been found to reduce inflammation and aid in curing COVID-19. By constructing a radiolabeled RBD as a molecular probe, ACE2 expression can be explored non-invasively, and the pathway for inhibiting ACE2 through radiotherapy can be investigated.

Review of the risk of cancer following low and moderate doses of sparsely ionising radiation received in early life in groups with individually estimated doses

Mark P. Little et al.

Summary: Studies show that there is a significant increase in the risk of cancer and benign neoplasms in infants and children who receive low or moderate levels of radiation. The risks are particularly higher in those exposed to radiation in utero or as children, with brain/CNS tumors, thyroid cancer, and leukemia showing particularly large excess relative risks.

A model of infection and immune response to low dose radiation

Charles Kirkby

Summary: This study aims to develop a mathematical model based on viral load data to investigate viral infection and systemic inflammation in COVID-19 patients, and explore the immunomodulatory effect of low dose radiation therapy (LDRT). The results suggest that early application of LDRT can reduce the peak inflammation, but patients treated with LDRT near the peak of inflammation may not see significant reductions in that peak.

Summary: The combination of low dose radiotherapy (LDRT) and standard pharmacologic therapy in COVID-19 patients has been shown to improve oxygenation, expedite clinical recovery, shorten hospital stay, and enhance radiological resolution. LDRT's anti-inflammatory effect may provide additional clinical benefit to COVID-19 patients.

Summary: This study indicates that low-dose whole lung radiation therapy is effective in ameliorating acute inflammatory lung injury, with 1.0 Gy being the most effective dose and more beneficial for moderate pneumonitis. Mechanistically, LDLR at 1.0 Gy significantly suppresses bleomycin-induced accumulation of pulmonary interstitial macrophages, CD103+ DCs, and neutrophil-DC hybrids.

Cancer risks among studies of medical diagnostic radiation exposure in early life without quantitative estimates of dose

Mark P. Little et al.

Summary: Evidence suggests an excess risk of childhood cancer after medical diagnostic radiation exposure in utero or in childhood, with recent studies indicating reduced risk. Postnatal exposure to diagnostic radiation is associated with significant excess risks of leukemia, brain, and solid cancers, with variations in risk by cancer type and type of exposure. However, there is significant heterogeneity among studies on postnatal exposure, which affects the strength of evidence for a causal relationship between childhood radiation imaging and subsequent cancer risk.

Summary: Studies have shown consistent elevations of risk for various types of childhood cancer, including leukemia, with antenatal X-ray exposure, although results vary when considering categories with limited data. The interpretational value of cohort studies is limited due to low statistical power and other identified shortcomings, while the overall combination of other case-control/case-cohort studies supports the inference that low-level radiation exposure in utero proportional increases the risk of childhood cancers.
