Review of the risk of cancer following low and moderate doses of sparsely ionising radiation received in early life in groups with individually estimated doses

Mark P. Little et al.

Summary: Studies show that there is a significant increase in the risk of cancer and benign neoplasms in infants and children who receive low or moderate levels of radiation. The risks are particularly higher in those exposed to radiation in utero or as children, with brain/CNS tumors, thyroid cancer, and leukemia showing particularly large excess relative risks.

Cancer risks among studies of medical diagnostic radiation exposure in early life without quantitative estimates of dose

Mark P. Little et al.

Summary: Evidence suggests an excess risk of childhood cancer after medical diagnostic radiation exposure in utero or in childhood, with recent studies indicating reduced risk. Postnatal exposure to diagnostic radiation is associated with significant excess risks of leukemia, brain, and solid cancers, with variations in risk by cancer type and type of exposure. However, there is significant heterogeneity among studies on postnatal exposure, which affects the strength of evidence for a causal relationship between childhood radiation imaging and subsequent cancer risk.

Mortality among individuals exposed to atomic bomb radiation in utero: 1950-2012

Hiromi Sugiyama et al.

Summary: The study found that antenatal radiation exposure is a consistent risk factor for increased solid cancer mortality among females, but not among males. The effect of exposure to atomic bomb radiation on noncancer disease and external cause mortality among individuals exposed in utero was mediated through small head size, low birth weight, and parental loss.

Long-Term Effects of Ionizing Radiation on the Hippocampus: Linking Effects of the Sonic Hedgehog Pathway Activation with Radiation Response

Francesca Antonelli et al.

Summary: Radiation therapy is a primary treatment modality for brain tumors, but long-term neurocognitive decline significantly affects quality of life. Recent evidence suggests that modulating the Shh signaling pathway can mitigate hippocampal radiation injury and improve brain repair and functional recovery after radio-induced injury.

A review of the types of childhood cancer associated with a medical X-ray examination of the pregnant mother

Richard Wakeford et al.

Summary: Studies have shown consistent elevations of risk for various types of childhood cancer, including leukemia, with antenatal X-ray exposure, although results vary when considering categories with limited data. The interpretational value of cohort studies is limited due to low statistical power and other identified shortcomings, while the overall combination of other case-control/case-cohort studies supports the inference that low-level radiation exposure in utero proportional increases the risk of childhood cancers.

Long-Term Recovery of the Adaptive Immune System in Rhesus Macaques After Total Body Irradiation

Andrew N. Macintyre et al.

Summary: A prospective study on the delayed immune effects of radiation in rhesus macaques revealed that ionizing radiation can cause subtle but long-lasting immune defects, characterized by changes in specific immune cell frequencies and incomplete T cell reconstitution. These findings highlight the need for further research on the immunological consequences of irradiation.
