Investigating the barriers to growth in the Indian food processing sector

Gaurvendra Singh et al.

Summary: The Indian food processing sector has significant growth potential, yet faces various barriers such as lack of standardization and quality, rain-dependent farming, and high costs of cold chain facilities. Analyzing these barriers and using the analytic hierarchy process can help in understanding them and their relative importance effectively.

Make-in-India and Industry 4.0: technology readiness of select firms, barriers and socio-technical implications

Mohit Goswami et al.

Summary: This research aims to study the differences among India's Make-in-India, Germany's Industry 4.0, and China's Made-in-China 2025, identify the adoption status of Industry 4.0 technologies in individual industry segments in India, and propose socio-technical interventions. The study found that automotive and software firms are well-positioned to adopt Industry 4.0 technology, while infrastructure project management firms are least ready. Common barriers to adoption include resistance to change, unclear economic benefits, and coordination problems.

Forward and reverse logistics vehicle routing problems with time horizons in B2C e-commerce logistics

Mengdi Zhang et al.

Summary: This research addresses a vehicle routing problem with simultaneous pickup and delivery with time windows from multiple depots in the B2C e-commerce logistics system. By developing a mixed-integer non-linear programming model and using exact optimization methods and metaheuristic algorithms, the study successfully minimizes transportation costs and penalties in large-scale instances.

Vehicle Routing Problem with Transshipment: Mathematical Model and Algorithm

Thanapat Leelertkij et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new variant of vehicle routing problem with paired transshipment demands (VRPT) in a distribution network of high-end retail department stores in Thailand. It formulates a mixed integer linear programming model and develops a hybrid threshold accepting and neighborhood search heuristic to solve large instances of VRPT, while introducing a forbidden list to prevent excessive distance increase from satisfying transshipment demands. Promising computational testing results show effectiveness of the proposed hybrid heuristics and forbidden list.

Food system resilience and COVID-19? Lessons from the Asian experience

Shenggen Fan et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the impact of COVID-19 on the food system, particularly in Asia, and the relatively resilient nature of Asian food systems compared to other regions. It analyzes the initial responses of governments and global agencies to manage the crisis, while also considering the outlook for food system resilience post-COVID-19 and the potential long-term effects of the pandemic. The paper emphasizes the importance of learning lessons from the current pandemic response, as similar shock events may occur in the future.

Food safety issues in fresh produce supply chain with particular reference to sub-Saharan Africa

O. Charles Aworh

Summary: Developing countries, especially sub-Saharan Africa, face the greatest burden of food-borne illnesses with animal-source foods and fresh produce being the leading causes. Pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and chemical contaminants are the primary agents of food-borne illnesses in SSA. Improving food safety practices, post-harvest handling, market infrastructure, and technology adoption can enhance food safety in SSA.

Sustainable last-mile distribution in B2C e-commerce: Do consumers really care?

Geisa Pereira Marcilio Nogueira et al.

Summary: Consumers have prioritized cost and speed over sustainability in e-commerce decisions, with delivery speed being the most important purchase criterion. They are more willing to be flexible on speed than on cost, and demographic characteristics and product types influence their motivation to prioritize sustainability. There is potential to educate e-consumers by spreading environmental information and revising their priorities when purchasing online.
