On the torsional and coupled torsion-tension/compression behavior of magnesium alloy solid rod: A crystal plasticity evaluation

Twinning in rolled AZ31B magnesium alloy under free-end torsion

Summary: The study experimentally characterized the mechanical response and microstructure evolution of a rolled AZ31B magnesium alloy using companion thin-walled tubular specimens under free-end monotonic torsion. It was found that the shear stress-shear strain response exhibits a sigmodal shape with four distinctive stages of strain hardening, involving basal slips, tension twinning, and compressing twinning. The formation of twin-twin boundaries (TTBs) and the collective hardening effects by twin boundary (TB) and TTB contribute to a unique rise in strain hardening rate in certain stages. Further observations of different types of twins and their interactions provide insights into the deformation mechanisms during different stages of the process.

Effects of texture and twinning on the torsional behavior of magnesium alloy solid rod: A crystal plasticity approach in comparison with uniaxial tension/compression

Summary: In this study, an elastic visco-plastic self-consistent model with twinning and detwinning scheme, along with a torsion specific finite element approach, is used to simulate the deformation behavior of magnesium alloy solid rod with different initial textures. It was found that the deformation mechanisms, stress-strain response, Swift effect, and deformation texture vary significantly with different initial textures and loading paths, highlighting the importance of understanding the influence of these factors on mechanical properties.

The effects of heat treatment on the response of WE43 Mg alloy: crystal plasticity finite element simulation and SEM-DIC experiment

Summary: This study investigates the effects of heat treatment on the mechanical response of a WE43 Mg alloy using an integrated framework of SEM-DIC experiment and CPFE simulation, focusing on local displacement and strain. By evaluating the CPFE framework with results from SEM-DIC experiment, the effects of heat treatment were analyzed using CRSS and relative slip activity. The study also addresses the contributions of different strengthening mechanisms on CRSS in WE43 Mg alloy.

Twinning characteristics in rolled AZ31B magnesium alloy under three stress states

Summary: Stress-strain responses and twinning characteristics were studied for a rolled AZ31B magnesium alloy under three different stress states. Tension twinning is extensively induced in twinning-favorable directions, with different twin variants activated in each stress state. The increase in hardening rate is attributed to the effect of twin boundaries and twinning texture-induced slip activities, with higher tension twin volume fractions observed under tension and compression states.
