Tensile and compressive plastic deformation behavior of medium-entropy Cr-Co-Ni single crystals from cryogenic to elevated temperatures

Le Li et al.

Summary: The equiatomic Cr-Co-Ni medium-entropy alloy with a FCC structure was studied for its various properties, including the measurement of critical resolved shear stress and the formation of deformation twinning. The CRSS value increases significantly with decreasing temperature and undergoes changes below 50 K. Additionally, the form and characteristics of deformation twinning at different temperatures were also investigated.

Dependence of microstructures on fatigue performance of polycrystals: A comparative study of conventional and additively manufactured 316L stainless steel

Luqing Cui et al.

Summary: The fatigue properties and microstructural evolution of 316L stainless steel manufactured by laser powder bed fusion were studied and compared with the wrought counterpart. The as-built L-PBF 316LSS exhibited a unique microstructure with high serrated grain boundaries, bimodal grain structure, nano-precipitates, solidification cell structures, and chemical segregations. The hardness and fatigue resistance of L-PBF 316LSS were significantly improved compared to the wrought solution annealed samples due to its unique microstructural characteristics and enhanced planar slip.

Comparing the deformation mechanism in 316 L stainless steel fabricated by hybrid and additive manufacturing

Rangasayee Kannan et al.

Summary: This study compared the higher elongation and minimal strength drop of 316L stainless steel manufactured using hybrid and fully additive approaches, finding that twinning was the dominant deformation mechanism in both cases. The lower fraction of twins in hybrid approach delayed the onset of steady-state strain hardening rate, leading to an overall increase in elongation to failure.

Summary: The study investigated the evolution of damage, texture, and strain in additive manufactured 316L stainless steel during in-situ tensile loading using high energy X-rays. It was found that the inhomogeneous distribution of porosity near the surface played a significant role in damage evolution, leading to reduced ductility and final failure in thin-walled AM samples.

Summary: Metal additive manufacturing provides a unique opportunity to explore extreme microstructural regimes and their effects on the mechanical properties of polycrystals. This study investigated the influence of different processing conditions on microstructural features and the resulting mechanical response through experimentation and simulation. The findings offer insights into the primary microstructural effects on the mechanical behavior of polycrystals, particularly in highly diverse microstructural regimes typically obtained through metal additive manufacturing.

Cryogenic mechanical properties of 316L stainless steel fabricated by selective laser melting

Chao Wang et al.

Summary: 316L stainless steel fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) has excellent corrosion resistance and high strength at cryogenic temperature, attributed to its unique microstructure with columnar grain structure and intragranular cellular structure. The mechanical properties at low temperature indicate that horizontal specimens have slightly better performance compared to vertical specimens.

Summary: The room-temperature tensile behavior of AM 316L SS was studied using high-energy X-ray diffraction and X-ray tomography. It was found that AM 316L SS exhibited high dislocation storage capability and an attractive combination of strength and ductility during plastic deformation. The morphological changes of built-in pores in AM 316L SS during deformation and fracture were also revealed to have significant roles in the material's performance.
