The boron transporter SiBOR1 functions in cell wall integrity, cellular homeostasis, and panicle development in foxtail millet

Hailong Wang et al.

Summary: This study identified the function of the SiBOR1 gene in Setaria italica and found that it encodes a B efflux transporter protein that plays a crucial role in the development of panicle primary branches and grain yield. These findings are important for understanding the relationship between B transport and plant development.

Alleviation of boron toxicity in plants: Mechanisms and approaches

Tianwei Hua et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes recent advances in mechanisms and approaches for alleviating boron toxicity in plants. Three main mechanisms have been outlined: reducing tissue boron concentration, decreasing cellular active boron, and enhancing physiological tolerance. The alleviative approaches include applying nutrient elements, plant growth regulators, plant growth-promoting microbes, as well as leaching boron out of the topsoil and washing boron off plant leaves. Future studies will focus on more practical approaches for alleviating boron toxicity and a better understanding of related mechanisms.

Myriophyllum elatinoides: A potential candidate for the phytoremediation of water with low level boron contamination

Jingye Xia et al.

Summary: Phytoremediation is an effective strategy for removing boron from polluted water. This study shows that Myriophyllum elatinoides has high hyperaccumulation potential for boron, but excess boron damages its cells, particularly affecting chloroplasts, mitochondria, and nucleoli. Future research should focus on evaluating the physiological and genetic mechanisms of boron tolerance and accumulation in M. elatinoides under different conditions.

Mechanistic insights on melatonin-mediated drought stress mitigation in plants

Rahul Kumar Tiwari et al.

Summary: Melatonin has emerged as a potential signaling molecule to enhance stress tolerance in plants by regulating various physiological processes and scavenging reactive oxygen species generated during drought. Additionally, it improves water absorption capacity of roots and modulates hormonal cross-talk to mitigate the adverse effects of drought stress. Overall, melatonin is a versatile bio-molecule that promotes growth and enhances yield under drought stress, making it a suitable candidate for eco-friendly crop production to ensure food security.

Phytic acid: Blessing in disguise, a prime compound required for both plant and human nutrition

Awadhesh Kumar et al.

Summary: Phytic acid is the principal storage compound of phosphorus in seeds, but it may lead to micronutrient deficiencies in humans. The two main concerns about the presence of phytic acid in the human diet are its negative impact on the bioavailability of several minerals and its inhibition of protein degradation in the stomach and small intestine.

Responses of Photosynthetic Performance of Sugar Beet Varieties to Foliar Boron Spraying

Zhenzhen Wu et al.

Summary: The experiment aimed to clarify the effect of boron application on different boron-sensitive beet varieties. The results showed that an appropriate amount of boron could significantly increase photosynthetic rate, SPAD value, and PIABS in leaves. However, excessive boron application would lead to toxicity and inhibited growth behavior of beets.
