Synergetic effects of microbial-phytoremediation reshape microbial communities and improve degradation of petroleum contaminants

Ao Wang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of natural attenuation, microbial remediation, phytoremediation, and microbial-phytoremediation in degrading petroleum hydrocarbons. The findings showed that the roots of the plant absorbed small amounts of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, resulting in changes in the soil microbial community structure. The abundance of petroleum-degrading bacteria and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria increased, along with microbial diversity.

Role of arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis in remediation of anthropogenic soil pollution

Laura Yesenia Solis-Ramos et al.

Summary: This review discusses the successful evidence of using arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis in phytoextraction and phytostabilization processes, including mechanisms such as altered heavy metal uptake and distribution, improved mineral nutrition and water availability, protection against oxidative stress, and enhanced soil physical stability by producing glomalin. This study also highlights plant species associated with mycorrhizal fungi as a strategy for phytostabilizing heavy metals and reducing translocation to aboveground parts of plants.
