An Assessment of the Drag Models in the Case of a Shock Interacting With a Fixed Bed of Point Particles

Rahul Babu Koneru et al.

Summary: In this study, three-dimensional Euler-Lagrange (EL) point-particle simulations of a shock wave interacting with a fixed bed of particles were conducted. The results demonstrated that point-particle simulations can accurately capture the gas dynamic features of the flow and require dissipative drag to predict the mean behavior of the gas. Additionally, two-way coupled simulations were performed at different conditions, showing discrepancies between point-particle and particle-resolved simulations, with a strong influence of the inviscid-unsteady force on the gas quantities.

Performance of drag force models for shock-accelerated flow in dense particle suspensions

Andreas Nygard Osnes et al.

Summary: Evaluation of drag force prediction models within a particle cloud after shock-acceleration quantified the impact of disturbances from nearby particles; two dense particle curtain correction schemes improved particle force predictions significantly; volume fraction correction provided the best results for accurate predictions of mean flow fields in Eulerian-Lagrangian simulations.

Particle-resolved simulation of freely evolving particle suspensions: Flow physics and modeling

Vahid Tavanashad et al.

Summary: This study aims to understand the dynamics of freely evolving particle suspensions across a wide range of particle-to-fluid density ratios, quantifying the average drag force and proposing a correlation for interphase drag force in terms of volume fraction, Reynolds number, and density ratio. The study shows that the effects of particle velocity fluctuations, particle clustering, and particle mobility can impact the drag of freely evolving suspensions in various ways, and highlights the interdependence of particle clustering and particle velocity fluctuations. Two different approaches were used to develop the drag correlation, which can be utilized in computational fluid dynamics simulations to predict overall flow behavior accurately.

Fluid density effects in supersonic jet-induced cratering in a granular bed on a planetary body having an atmosphere in the continuum regime

Kaushik Balakrishnan et al.

Summary: The study investigates the influence of atmospheric density and jet-fluid density on supersonic jet-induced cratering on a granular particle bed using large eddy simulation coupled with a granular flow model. Results show that the crater cross-sectional shapes, depth, and ejecta amount depend on the ratio between jet-fluid density and atmospheric density. Conical craters are deeper, have smaller diameters, and more ejecta compared to parabolic craters, which are shallower with larger diameters and subdued ejecta.

A lower-than-expected saltation threshold at Martian pressure and below

Bruno Andreotti et al.

Summary: The experiments reveal that Martian conditions belong to a previously unexplored saltation regime, with the threshold wind speed for saltation decreasing unexpectedly with higher density ratios. Impact ripples, on the other hand, show characteristic wavelength and propagation velocity independent of pressure. This suggests that sediment transport at low Reynolds number but high grain-to-fluid density ratio may be dominated by collective effects associated with grain inertia in the granular collisional layer.

Modeling of dusty gas flows due to plume impingement on a lunar surface

Arun K. Chinnappan et al.

Summary: A novel two-way coupled dusty-gas flow model has been developed in the DSMC framework for the study of dust dispersion on the lunar surface. Gas-grain interactions are modeled through momentum and energy exchange between phases, and the model is validated against theoretical relations for a zero-dimensional simulation. The computational model is used to analyze the influence of particle diameter and hovering altitudes on gas and grain phases, as well as dust transportation.
