Engineering a cell-hydrogel-fibre composite to mimic the structure and function of the tendon synovial sheath

Angela Imere et al.

Summary: The development of a bilayer membrane combining a nanofibrous PCL mesh with a layer of SAPH laden with type-B synoviocytes is proposed to prevent post-operative peritendinous adhesions, restore tendon lubrication, and aid in synovial sheath regeneration. The PCL mesh has adequate mechanical properties and the incorporation of SAPH layer allows good lubrication properties, making restoration of tendon gliding possible. Viability and metabolic activity tests showed that the SAPH promoted sustained production of hyaluronic acid, providing an anti-friction layer for tendon gliding.

Sequential dual-drug delivery of BMP-2 and alendronate from hydroxyapatite-collagen scaffolds for enhanced bone regeneration

Dongtak Lee et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the synergistic effect of releasing BMP-2 and ALN in a sequential manner for enhanced bone regeneration. By combining these two bioactive molecules, the collagen-hydroxyapatite composite scaffolds significantly increase osteogenic activity, showing potential for application in cell-free tissue engineering.

Three-dimensional collagen-based scaffold model to study the microenvironment and drug-resistance mechanisms of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas

Summary: The study utilized a 3D biomimetic scaffold to mimic the tumor microenvironment of OSCC and found differences in phenotypic and genetic features between HPV-positive and HPV-negative cell lines in the scaffold. The 3D cultures induced increased expression of markers related to EMT and matrix interactions, as well as different migration behavior, suggesting that the 3D architecture can be used to study the different clinical outcomes of OSCC patients.
