The association between the maternal diet and the maternal and infant gut microbiome: a systematic review

Siofra E. Maher et al.

Summary: During pregnancy, the maternal gut microbiome and potentially the fetal microbiome undergo changes. Diet has been shown to impact the gut microbiome, but little research has been conducted on diet during pregnancy. This review identified seven studies showing an association between maternal diet and gut microbiome, with high-fat diets being associated with reduced microbial diversity and fiber intake being positively associated with microbial diversity.

DNA extraction method influences human milk bacterial profiles

A. S. Cheema et al.

Summary: Evaluation of four DNA extraction methods revealed that kit QM is the most suitable for extracting bacterial DNA from human milk, as it was able to detect DNA in all samples with higher efficiency and reliability compared to other methods. The choice of extraction method significantly impacts the efficiency and bacterial community profiles obtained from human milk samples.

Izumi Mashima et al.

Summary: Two previously unknown strains of Veillonella, designated as Veillonella nakazawae, were isolated from the oral cavity of healthy Japanese children. These strains exhibited differences in catalase production, DNA sequencing, and nucleotide identity compared to known Veillonella species.

Cross-feeding between Bifidobacterium infantis and Anaerostipes caccae on lactose and human milk oligosaccharides

L. W. Chia et al.

Summary: The establishment of gut microbiota in infants, particularly through human milk oligosaccharides and the trophic interactions between Bifidobacterium infantis and Anaerostipes caccae, plays a crucial role in shaping the gut microbiota and promoting gut maturation.

Longitudinal Changes in Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs) Over the Course of 24 Months of Lactation

Jasmine F. Plows et al.

Summary: In a longitudinal study of Hispanic mother-infant pairs, it was found that the majority of HMOs in breast milk decrease in concentration over lactation, except for 3FL and 3'SL which significantly increase. Further research is needed to fully understand the functions of these HMOs.

Acquisition and establishment of the oral microbiota

A. M. (Marije) Kaan et al.

Summary: The acquisition and establishment of the oral microbiota is a dynamic process involving interactions with the host and its environment over various stages. From examining prenatal exposure to maternal microbiota, to discussing postnatal microbial transmission and the impact of host behavior and environment on oral microbiota, along with the changes in oral microbiota during growth and development, there are still many unanswered questions about understanding the acquisition and establishment of a healthy microbiome at an individual level.

Comparison between 16S rRNA and shotgun sequencing data for the taxonomic characterization of the gut microbiota

Francesco Durazzi et al.

Summary: This study compared the taxonomic results obtained from 16S rRNA gene sequencing and whole shotgun metagenomic sequencing, finding that shotgun sequencing is more capable of identifying rare taxa in chicken gut microbiota profiling. Additionally, the less abundant genera detected only by shotgun sequencing were found to be biologically meaningful.

Human Milk Lactose, Insulin, and Glucose Relative to Infant Body Composition during Exclusive Breastfeeding

Ali S. Cheema et al.

Summary: This study found that infant body composition is related to the concentrations and daily intakes of lactose, insulin, and glucose in human milk, as well as maternal body composition and 24-hour milk intake. In conclusion, 24-hour milk intake, lactose, and maternal adiposity are associated with the development of infant body composition.

Bifidobacterium species associated with breastfeeding produce aromatic lactic acids in the infant gut

Martin F. Laursen et al.

Summary: Breastfeeding-associated Bifidobacterium species can convert aromatic amino acids into aromatic lactic acids via an unrecognized enzyme, potentially impacting infant immune function. Longitudinal study of Danish infants showed that faecal concentrations of aromatic lactic acids are positively correlated with specific Bifidobacterium species abundance containing the enzyme. These microbial metabolites may have implications for early life immune function.

Variation in Human Milk Composition Is Related to Differences in Milk and Infant Fecal Microbial Communities

Ryan M. Pace et al.

Summary: Previous studies have shown that human milk composition, including HMOs, lactose, and protein, varies by geography, and these factors are associated with differences in milk and infant fecal microbial community structures. Geographic location strongly influences the microbial composition of milk and infant feces, but samples can be categorized into a smaller number of community state types based on shared microbial profiles.

Maternal milk microbiota and oligosaccharides contribute to the infant gut microbiota assembly

Martin Frederik Laursen et al.

Summary: Based on a study of 34 mother-infant dyads, it was found that the microbiota in breast milk changes over time and within a feeding session, likely due to the transfer of infant oral bacteria. Additionally, milk-associated bacteria and human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) may play a direct role in shaping the infant gut microbiota.
