Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Screening for Lung Cancer With Low-Dose Computed Tomography Updated Evidence Report and Systematic Review for the US Preventive Services Task Force

Daniel E. Jonas et al.

Summary: Screening high-risk individuals with LDCT can decrease lung cancer mortality but may also result in false positives, overdiagnosis, incidental findings, distress, and rarely radiation-induced cancers. More research is needed to optimize nodule evaluation protocols to minimize harms associated with screening.

Alternative Energy: Breaking Down the Diverse Metabolic Features of Lung Cancers

Kasey R. Cargill et al.

Summary: Metabolic reprogramming is a key feature of cancer initiation, progression, and relapse, with unique shifts in metabolism playing an important role in targeting cancer treatment. Research on lung cancer metabolism has been relatively limited, but recent evidence suggests that lung cancers have their own unique metabolic preferences.

Detection of Lung Cancer via Blood Plasma and 1H-NMR Metabolomics: Validation by a Semi-Targeted and Quantitative Approach Using a Protein-Binding Competitor

Elien Derveaux et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel approach for early lung cancer diagnosis using proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, which includes avoiding metabolite binding, using a new internal standard, and training a classification model to differentiate between cancer patients and healthy individuals. The study demonstrates high specificity, sensitivity, and area under the curve in a large patient cohort, with robustness shown through validation in an independent cohort.

Immunotherapy in Extensive-Stage Small Cell Lung Cancer

Rola El Sayed et al.

Summary: Small cell lung cancer is a disease with aggressive features and limited treatment options. Immunotherapy has changed the treatment landscape for many cancers, including SCLC, but questions remain on how to best implement and enhance responses to this treatment.

Metabolites and the tumour microenvironment: from cellular mechanisms to systemic metabolism

Ilaria Elia et al.

Summary: The article provides a detailed examination of the complexity of cellular metabolism within the tumor microenvironment, along with potential therapeutic intervention opportunities. Cancer cell metabolism and behavior are regulated by multiple factors, and the metabolic environment within the TME is influenced by various tiers. Understanding the interactions of these tiers reveals unique therapeutic potential for modulating the metabolic profile and function of all cells in the TME.
