C/EBPB-dependent adaptation to palmitic acid promotes tumor formation in hormone receptor negative breast cancer

Summary: Epidemiological studies have confirmed the positive association between obesity and postmenopausal breast cancer incidence. This study reveals that obesity-associated tumor formation is driven by cellular adaptation rather than the expansion of pre-existing clones. Cellular adaptation to obesity is regulated by palmitic acid and increases the tumor formation capacity of breast cancer cells. This process is epigenetically controlled through increased chromatin occupancy of the transcription factor CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein beta (C/EBPB), and it regulates cancer stem-like properties by modulating the expression of key downstream regulators.

Dietary palmitic acid promotes a prometastatic memory via Schwann cells
