QTL analysis in multiple sorghum mapping populations facilitates dissection of the genetic control of agronomic and yield-related traits in sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (Moench)]

B. Techale et al.

Summary: This study successfully mapped the QTLs for agronomic and yield-related traits in elite Ethiopian sorghum germplasm using three connected mapping populations of different genetic backgrounds. A total of 105 QTLs were identified, and 25 meta QTLs were found on a combined consensus map, providing important references for genetic studies and marker-assisted breeding programs in sorghum. The research also revealed substantial standing variation among the lines, especially in the trait of reduced leaf senescence, which could be utilized in improving drought tolerance of sorghum.

Genetic variation underlying kernel size, shape, and color in two interspecific S. bicolor2 x S. halepense subpopulations

Pheonah Nabukalu et al.

Summary: Genetic variation and architecture of sorghum kernel traits have been extensively studied, revealing significant QTLs associated with different aspects of kernel morphology and color. The presence of alleles from Sorghum halepense that enhance some kernel-related traits in elite sorghums indicates the potential for genetic improvement of grain and quality traits in both annual and perennial sorghums using genomic tools.

Genetic architecture of maize yield traits dissected by QTL mapping and GWAS in maize

Xiao Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the genetic architecture of grain yield in maize was investigated using genome-wide association study (GWAS) and coexpression networks. Candidate genes associated with yield traits were identified, and the effects of pyramiding superior alleles were evaluated. The study identified environmentally stable SNPs, pleiotropic SNPs, and hotspots associated with yield traits. The findings provide valuable genetic information and resources for molecular breeding of maize grain yield.

Fine mapping of a kernel length-related gene with potential value for maize breeding

Dianming Gong et al.

Summary: Kernel size is a crucial factor affecting yield in cereals, with kernel length being a key determining factor. A novel major QTL, qKL9, controlling maize kernel length was identified and confirmed through various population tests. This QTL shows promising potential for genetic improvement in maize kernel-related traits.

Genetic dissection of QTLs associated with spikelet-related traits and grain size in sorghum

Hideki Takanashi et al.

Summary: This study conducted QTL analyses on spikelet- and grain-related traits in sorghum, revealing that most spikelet organ length- and width-related traits are partially controlled by the dwarf genes Dw1 and Dw3, while these genes have limited impact on the regulation of grain size. The identified QTLs provide insights into the genetic basis of spikelet- and grain-related traits in sorghum.

A C-terminal encoded peptide, ZmCEP1, is essential for kernel development in maize

Ruibin Xu et al.

Summary: C-terminal encoded peptides (CEPs) serve as mobile signals coordinating developmental programs in plants, with ZmCEP1 playing a crucial role in maize development and growth. Overexpression of ZmCEP1 leads to reduced plant and seed size, while knockout of ZmCEP1 results in improved plant height, kernel size, and weight. Transcriptome analysis reveals that ZmCEP1 regulates genes related to nitrogen metabolism, nitrate transport, sugar transport, and auxin response in maize.

Summary: Drought poses a major environmental threat to maize production, leading to yield losses due to asynchronism between male and female inflorescences during flowering. The gene ZmEXPA4 has been identified as having a significant relationship with increased ASI under drought conditions, and genetic manipulation of its expression has potential for trait improvement in maize ears.
