Genome-wide identification of nitrate transporter 2 (NRT2) gene family and functional analysis of MeNRT2.2 in cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz)

Lili You et al.

Summary: In this study, six MeNRT2 genes were identified from cassava genome, showing differential expression patterns and response to nitrate deficient treatment. The phylogenetic analysis revealed the distribution of NRT2 proteins in four main subgroups, with MeNRT2.2 displaying the highest expression level after treatment. Arabidopis transformed with MeNRT2.2 gene showed higher fresh weight in response to nitrogen starvation, suggesting its important role in adapting to low nitrogen conditions.

Apparent fertilizer N recovery and the relationship between grain yield and grain protein concentration of different winter wheat varieties in a long-term field trial

Klaus Sieling et al.

Summary: The study showed that newer varieties such as Tommi and Julius had higher apparent fertilizer nitrogen recovery rates and increased grain yield and protein concentration compared to older varieties like Diplomat, Kanzler, Orestis, and Ritmo when different nitrogen fertilizer treatments were applied at three different dates. While older varieties exhibited a negative linear correlation between grain yield and protein concentration, the newer varieties responded differently, showing stable protein concentration with rising grain yield under certain nitrogen application levels. This difference was possibly due to a more pronounced post-anthesis nitrogen uptake.

NRT2.1, a major contributor to cadmium uptake controlled by high-affinity nitrate transporters

MeiYan Guan et al.

Summary: The management of nitrogen fertilizer is an effective strategy for controlling cadmium accumulation in plants. Mutants with loss of function of nitrate transporters showed lower Cd concentrations under certain conditions, with NRT2.1 being identified as the major contributor to Cd uptake. Additionally, positive correlations between nitrate uptake and Cd concentration in plants were observed, indicating the importance of nitrate transporters in Cd accumulation control.
