Social cognition in patients with acquired brain lesions: An overview on an under-reported problem

Maria Grazia Maggio et al.

Summary: Social cognition is crucial for individuals to engage in functional social behaviors and achieve goals. Acquired brain injury can impair social cognition, leading to interpersonal dysfunction and poor behavior regulation, impacting both patients and their families' social adaptation and quality of life. Therefore, researchers and clinicians should pay attention to the important role of social cognition in neurological patients.

Cytoplasmic-predominant Pten increases microglial activation and synaptic pruning in a murine model with autism-like phenotype

Nicholas Sarn et al.

Summary: Germline mutations in PTEN contribute to approximately 10% of cases of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with macrocephaly. Research on a mouse model with cytoplasmic localization of PTEN revealed that abnormal PTEN localization leads to macrocephaly and autistic-like traits. Transcriptomic analysis showed upregulated gene pathways related to myeloid cell activation, migration, and phagocytosis, suggesting a potential role of PTEN in microglial activation and synaptic pruning.

Calcium Channel-Dependent Induction of Long-Term Synaptic Plasticity at Excitatory Golgi Cell Synapses of Cerebellum

F. Locatelli et al.

Summary: Research has found that excitatory synapses on Golgi cells in the cerebellum exhibit a unique voltage dependence in long-term plasticity, with activation of T-type and L-type Ca2+ channels playing important roles in inducing LTP and LTD. Additionally, there is an inverted relationship between plasticity at mossy fiber-Golgi cell synapses and mossy fiber-granule cell synapses in terms of voltage dependence.

Deleting Mecp2 from the cerebellum rather than its neuronal subtypes causes a delay in motor learning in mice

Nathan P. Achilly et al.

Summary: Rett syndrome, caused by mutations in MECP2, results in motor dysfunction. Deleting Mecp2 from the cerebellum delays motor learning and leads to irregular firing rates of Purkinje cells and altered chromatin structure. This suggests that cerebellar dysfunction contributes to the motor deficits in Rett syndrome.

Major motor and gait deficits with sexual dimorphism in a Shank3 mutant mouse model

Emmanuel Matas et al.

Summary: The Shank3 Delta C/Delta C mice exhibited significant impairments in social behavior, stereotyped behavior, and gait, along with decreased Purkinje cells and mGluR5 expression in the cerebellum. On the other hand, Shank3+/Delta C mice only showed impairments in social behavior and reduced mGluR5 expression to a lesser extent. The deficits were more pronounced in male mice compared to females.

Motor and higher-order functions topography of the human dentate nuclei identified with tractography and clustering methods

Fulvia Palesi et al.

Summary: This study identified the topography of human dentate nuclei using multimodal MRI approaches, defining motor and higher-order function regions. Results showed that over half of the dentate nuclei volume is involved in non-motor functions, with connectivity-based and microstructure-based atlases providing complementary information.

An Autism-Associated Neuroligin-3 Mutation Affects Developmental Synapse Elimination in the Cerebellum

Esther Suk King Lai et al.

Summary: The R451C mutation in NLGN3 affects synaptic development and function in the mouse cerebellum, causing impairment in the formation of CF to PC synapses and altering the I/E balance of synaptic inputs to PCs. This mutation significantly influences the refinement of synaptic connections in cerebellar circuitry, potentially contributing to the pathogenesis of ASD.
