Astrocytic MicroRNA in Ageing, Inflammation, and Neurodegenerative Disease

Aimee J. Chu et al.

Summary: Astrocytes play an active role in regulating various cell types and are significantly affected by ageing, inflammatory processes, and neurodegenerative diseases. Dysregulated expression of microRNA in astrocytes can lead to altered function and the release of cytokines, ultimately contributing to the symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases.

Transcription Factor TWIST1 Integrates Dendritic Remodeling and Chronic Stress to Promote Depressive-like Behaviors

Jin-Gang He et al.

Summary: The study found that the expression of TWIST1 in the brain is positively correlated with depressive behaviors, chronic stress can elevate TWIST1 expression in the medial prefrontal cortex of mice which can be reversed by fluoxetine treatment. Overexpression of TWIST1 increases susceptibility to stress, while knockdown of TWIST1 prevents defective dendrite morphogenesis in mice and alleviates depressive-like behaviors. The prodepressant property of TWIST1 is mediated by the repression of miR-214-PPAR-delta signaling and mitochondrial function, which can be mimicked by genetic and pharmacological inhibition of PPAR-delta.

Isoliquiritin ameliorates depression by suppressing NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis via miRNA-27a/SYK/NF-κB axis

Yuanjie Li et al.

Summary: The results showed that miRNA-27a expression was reduced in the serum of depressed patients and in animal models of depression. Isoliquiritin demonstrated significant antidepressant effects by decreasing NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis through the miRNA-27a/SYK/NF-kappa B axis.

Downregulation of miR-383 reduces depression-like behavior through targeting Wnt family member 2 (Wnt2) in rats

Shanshan Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that miR-383 plays a key role in regulating the Wnt-2 signaling pathway in a chronic stress model, it attenuates neural injury in rats by inhibiting apoptosis and inflammatory response, increasing the expression of depression-impacted proteins and neurotransmitters.

miR-96 Inhibits SV2C to Promote Depression-Like Behavior and Memory Disorders in Mice

Lidong Sun et al.

Summary: The study provides evidence that miR-96 negatively regulates the expression of SV2C, leading to depression-like behavior and memory impairment in mice. Downregulation of miR-96 or overexpression of SV2C improved memory and emotional behavior in mice. This highlights the potential of miR-96-targeted therapeutics in treating depression-like behavior and memory disorders.

Hippocampal miR-211-5p regulates neurogenesis and depression-like behaviors in the rat

Ye Li et al.

Summary: The study reveals that altered levels of miR-211-5p in the hippocampal DG area have a significant impact on neurogenesis, apoptosis, and depression-like behaviors in rats. Specifically, up-regulation of miR-211-5p can alleviate depression-like behaviors, reduce neuronal apoptosis, and promote neuronal regeneration; while down-regulation of miR-211-5p can induce depression-like behaviors, increase neuronal apoptosis, and decrease neuronal regeneration.

MiRNA-199a-5p targets WNT2 to regulate depression through the CREB/BDNF signaling in hippocampal neuron

Zheng Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that miR-199a-5p expression levels were significantly increased in the cerebrospinal fluids and serums of depression patients as well as in the hippocampus of chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) mice. However, the expressions of WNT2, p-CREB, and BDNF were inhibited. In addition, the miR-199a-5p inhibitor enhanced certain behaviors associated with depression in CUMS mice, and this effect was attenuated by knockdown of WNT2.

Long Noncoding RNAs in Neurodegenerative Diseases: Pathogenesis and Potential Implications as Clinical Biomarkers

Meng Zhang et al.

Summary: Neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's are influenced by genetic and environmental factors. Long noncoding RNAs play crucial roles in regulating gene expression and can potentially be used as biomarkers for NDD diagnostics and prognosis. Understanding the functions of lncRNAs in NDDs is essential for developing new therapeutic targets and improving noninvasive diagnostic methods.
