Impact of a spatially dependent dose delivery time structure on the biological effectiveness of scanning proton therapy

Koki Kasamatsu et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the spatially dependent biological effectiveness of protracted irradiation in scanning proton therapy, showing the importance of dose delivery time structure in accurate evaluation. Different scenarios in scanning beam delivery lead to varying distributions of biological dose, with prolonged treatment times impacting dose distribution and target homogeneity in clinical cases.

The Impact of Sub-Millisecond Damage Fixation Kinetics on the In Vitro Sparing Effect at Ultra-High Dose Rate in UNIVERSE

Hans Liew et al.

Summary: This study extended a biophysical mechanistic model based on the oxygen depletion hypothesis and introduced the temporal pulse structure. Experimental results showed that the model successfully reproduced the fast kinetics of the oxygen effect in irradiated mammalian cells, and it could be used to optimize potential clinical applications and accelerator development.

Combined DNA Damage Repair Interference and Ion Beam Therapy: Development, Benchmark, and Clinical Implications of a Mechanistic Biological Model

Hans Liew et al.

Summary: The study developed a mechanistic model to describe and predict radiation response after combined DDRi and particle radiation therapy. Results showed that UNIVERSE accurately predicts survival of cell lines with and without DDRi in clinical settings, revealing potential differences between DDRi + photon radiation therapy versus DDRi + particle radiation therapy.

Relative biological effectiveness of single and split helium ion doses in the rat spinal cord increases strongly with linear energy transfer

Lisa Hintz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of helium ions as a function of linear energy transfer (LET) for late effects in the central nervous system. The results showed that the RBE of helium ions increased with increasing LET and the increase at the distal edge of the Bragg-peak was larger than for protons. The findings contribute to the understanding of RBE modeling for different types of particles.

Summary: The research shows that FLASH radiation therapy has the potential to effectively reduce damage to normal tissues, with the sparing effect on cells/tissues strongly depending on DNA damage repair kinetics and radiation beam quality.
