Surface chemistry investigation of froth flotation products of lead-zinc sulfide ore using ToF-SIMS and multivariate analysis

Hao Lai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the surface chemistry differences between minerals in lead concentrate and tailings in complex flotation circuits of lead-zinc sulfide ores. The results showed that the adsorption of lead ions onto specific mineral surfaces was an important reason for the failed separation of minerals from galena. The surface chemical evidence provided by this study helps to better understand the selective separation mechanism of lead-zinc sulfide ores.

Summary: XPS surface chemical analysis has a history of over 60 years, and there has been a significant increase in the publication of XPS peak-fits and interpretations over the last 15 years. Unfortunately, some of these publications lack reliability and usefulness due to new authors not being familiar enough with XPS science and application. Efforts have been made to help new users with self-training guides and international standards.

Mineralogical characterization of copper sulfide tailings using automated mineral liberation analysis: A case study of the Chambishi Copper Mine tailings

Xiao-liang Zhang et al.

Summary: This research utilized MLA and SEM-EDS to investigate the occurrence mechanism of copper minerals in typical copper sulfide tailings, revealing that the predominant copper-bearing mineral was chalcopyrite closely intergrown with other minerals, and highly disseminated within gangue particles. The flotation tailings still contained liberated chalcopyrite and bornite due to their extremely fine granularity, and SEM-EDS analysis showed that copper minerals mainly occurred as fine dispersed and fully enclosed structures within gangue minerals. The information obtained from this research could provide useful references for recovering residual copper from flotation tailings.

Summary: The experimental study investigated the effects of solid surface, concentration, and temperature on dynamic contact angles of water and water based Si-C nanofluid. It was found that the contact angle of nanofluids decreases with increasing temperature and nanoparticles concentration, and the wettability of nanofluids on solid surfaces is better than water. Different solid surfaces exhibit varying degrees of wettability with the Si-C nanofluid, with Cu/Si-C nanofluid showing the best performance.

Effects of heating-sulfidation on the formation of zinc sulfide species on smithsonite surfaces and its response to flotation

Jinpeng Cai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the improvement of floatability of smithsonite through heating-sulfidation treatment. The results showed that the sulfidation behavior of smithsonite involves a chemical reaction and leads to the formation of a thick sulfide film on the surface. Additionally, the formation of zinc sulfide species composed of monosulfide and polysulfide was observed, with an increased S distribution ratio in polysulfide at higher sulfidation temperatures.

Improving surface sulfidization of azurite with ammonium bisulfate and its contribution to sulfidization flotation

Qiuyue Sheng et al.

Summary: Using NH4HSO4 as an activator was found to enhance the sulfidization flotation of azurite, increase the adsorption of Na2S and NaBX, and improve the floatability of azurite by reducing CO32- and OH- content on the surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis confirmed the increase in copper sulfide content and improved sulfidation of azurite with NH4HSO4. Density functional theory calculations showed that the interaction between Na2S and azurite surface was strengthened by NH4HSO4.

Selective passivation behavior of galena surface by sulfuric acid and a novel flotation separation method for copper-lead sulfide ore without collector and inhibitor

Haiyun Xie et al.

Summary: A new highly efficient passivation-separation method for copper-lead sulfide ores was developed in this study, which selectively inhibited galena and significantly reduced its floatability while slightly promoting that of chalcopyrite, allowing for their efficient separation with only the addition of frothers. The surface passivation mechanism was characterized by contact angle measurements, SEM-EDS, and XPS analysis, revealing the gradual oxidation of S elements on the galena surface to form a layer of hydrophilic lead sulfate, while a floatable copper sulfide layer was formed on chalcopyrite.
