Constitutive modeling of multiscale polycrystals considering grain structures and orientations

Jun-Yuan Zheng et al.

Summary: Traditional macro-scaled plasticity theories may not be fully valid in meso-/micro-scaled deformation studies due to size effects. The anisotropy of individual grains significantly affects the mechanical responses of polycrystalline metallic materials. Microcracks mainly initiate at grain boundary regions and grow along grain boundaries in meso-/microforming.

Mechanical behaviour and micromechanical modelling of medium-Mn steel microstructure evolution

Aleksandra Kozlowska et al.

Summary: Intense research efforts have been focused on the development of advanced medium-manganese steels for lightweight automotive components. The strain-induced martensitic transformation of metastable retained austenite, which is influenced by various factors including deformation temperature, plays a crucial role in determining the mechanical and technological properties of these steels. Experimental data and modeling approaches were used to comprehensively evaluate the mechanical response and microstructure evolution of the investigated steel.

A physically-based computational approach for processing-microstructure-property linkage of materials additively manufactured by laser powder bed fusion

Varvara Romanova et al.

Summary: A physically-based approach is proposed for evaluating the microstructure-to-property linkage of AlSi10Mg produced by Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF). The study demonstrates essential anisotropy of mechanical properties at the grain scale, with stress and strain field analyses showing that all stress tensor components make a comparable contribution to the deformation behavior under uniaxial tension.

Temperature effect on tensile behavior of an interstitial high entropy alloy: Crystal plasticity modeling

Xu Zhang et al.

Summary: Previous experiments have shown that coarse-grained interstitial high entropy alloys (iHEAs) exhibit higher yield stress and better strain hardening at cryogenic conditions compared to room temperature. In this study, a micromechanism-based crystal plasticity model is developed to investigate the temperature effect on the tensile behavior of iHEAs. The developed constitutive model is verified by comparing experimental results with simulated stress-strain curves and martensite volume fraction. The contributions of different strengthening mechanisms and grain size effects are quantified to understand the temperature dependence of the iHEA's yield stress.

A novel crystal plasticity model incorporating transformation induced plasticity for a wide range of strain rates and temperatures

D. S. Connolly et al.

Summary: Transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) is a common effect in advanced high strength steels (AHSS) that has promising applications in the automotive industry. Accurate thermo-mechanical modeling is crucial for utilizing the improved performance of AHSS exhibiting the TRIP effect. This study develops a novel crystal plasticity formulation that incorporates strain-induced martensitic transformation, and calibrates the model for a QP3Mn alloy. The calibrated model shows good agreement with literature trends and demonstrates the importance of capturing strain-rate dependent transformation.

A Crystal Plasticity Formulation for Simulating the Formability of a Transformation Induced Plasticity Steel

Pingcheng Zhang et al.

Summary: The study presents a crystal plasticity model based on micro-mechanics transformation criteria to successfully simulate the mechanical response of TRIP steel. The simulations demonstrate the significant impact of martensite transformation on improving formability, achieved by suppressing localization. Further parametric studies reveal the crucial sensitivity of controlling the timing of martensite generation for enhancing formability.
