Understanding the Surface Reconstruction on Ternary WxCoBx for Water Oxidation and Zinc-Air Battery Applications

Ali Saad et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis of various metal borides and their surface reconstruction under electrochemical activation. It is found that cyclic voltammetric activation enhances the activity of CoB and W2CoB2, while WB and WCoB remain stable. The surface reconstruction of W2CoB2 is more rapid and results in a larger active surface area compared to CoB. Additionally, the metallic W2CoB2 core displays better oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance than CoB. Therefore, W2CoB2 exhibits superior OER performance compared to CoB, WB, and WCoB. The mixture of W2CoB2 with Pt/C as catalysts in the air electrode of a rechargeable Zn-air battery also exhibits better performance than the IrO2-Pt/C couple-based Zn-air battery.

Defects-engineered tailoring of tri-doped interlinked metal-free bifunctional catalyst with lower gibbs free energy of OER/HER intermediates for overall water splitting

G. Yasin et al.

Summary: A facile tempted-defects assisted fractionation strategy was presented to synthesize N, S, and O tri-doped metal-free catalyst (DETDAP), which exhibits excellent bifunctional catalytic activity with low overpotential towards both the OER and HER. The tailored defects in tri-doped interlinking were found to enhance the bifunctional catalytic performance, providing a perceptive understanding of the synergetic principles of heteroatom-interlinking-tailoring nanostructures in water splitting.

Coplanar Pt/C Nanomeshes with Ultrastable Oxygen Reduction Performance in Fuel Cells

Yanmin Hu et al.

Summary: Efficient and highly stable catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction are essential for long-term operation of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The coplanar Pt-carbon nanomeshes synthesized in this study exhibit excellent activity and stability in fuel cell tests, with peak power density of 1.21 W cm(-2) and current density of 0.360 A cm(-2) at 0.80 V in the H-2/O-2 cell. Density-functional theory analysis suggests that the increased vacancy formation energy of Pt atoms in coplanar Pt/C NMs helps restrain Pt dissolution and aggregation.
