A critical review of recent advancements in continuous flow reactors and prominent integrated microreactors for biodiesel production

R. Gopi et al.

Summary: Biodiesel is an eco-friendly, less toxic biofuel that has been extensively researched in recent years to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and emissions. Continuous flow production techniques are now being focused on by researchers to improve efficiency and reduce energy consumption. Microreactor technology shows higher efficiency, improved mixing, and high heat and mass transfer rates compared to traditional reactors.

Heterogeneous numerical modelling for the auto thermal reforming of crude glycerol in a fixed bed reactor

Jason Williams et al.

Summary: In this study, a mathematical model was developed to describe the catalytic autothermal reforming (ATR) reaction of synthetic crude glycerol in a fixed bed tubular reactor. The model took into account the two-phase system of solid catalyst and bulk feed gas, and integrated the ATR reaction scheme and intrinsic kinetic rate model over an active nickel-based catalyst. The model was validated using experimental data and showed good agreement with the results.

A critical review on available models to predict engine fuel properties of biodiesel

Kiran Raj Bukkarapu et al.

Summary: This review critically analyzes the approaches and models available in the literature to predict biodiesel properties. It discusses the advantages, limitations, and reported deviations of these models, as well as the number of data points used for calibration and validation. The review also addresses the need for accurate models to predict biodiesel flashpoint temperature and oxidative stability, as well as the limitations in existing literature.

Comparison of gelatinous and calcined magnesia supported Ni or/and Co-based catalysts for aqueous phase reforming of glycerol

Dashuai Liu et al.

Summary: Two different types of catalysts with MgO support were prepared for aqueous phase reforming of glycerol, showing that catalyst supported by gelatinous MgO presents better dispersion and higher hydrogen yield. Higher reaction temperature benefits hydrogen production but decreases selectivity, while higher glycerol concentration increases both hydrogen yield and selectivity. Introducing CaO as an absorbent can improve the reaction by enhancing WGS reaction and reducing methanation reaction. The gelatinous Ni-Co/MgO catalyst exhibits superior activity and multi-cycle stability.

Catalytic conversion of bio-renewable glycerol to pure hydrogen and syngas: Energy management and mitigation of environmental pollution

Mohammad Hasan Khademi et al.

Summary: The research aims to produce pure hydrogen and syngas through a heat-integrated reactor to reduce dependence on hydrocarbon resources and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. Numerical results show that complete conversion of glycerol and methane and a hydrogen recovery rate of over 70% can be achieved by adjusting operating conditions effectively.

Evaluation of life cycle energy, economy and CO2 emissions for biomass chemical looping gasification topower generation

Usama Mohamed et al.

Summary: The study examined the life cycle energy use, CO2 emissions, and cost input of biomass gasification and biomass/coal gasification power generation plants, comparing them with coal combustion technologies. Gasification power plants demonstrated lower energy input and CO2 emissions but higher costs, while coal power plants showed lower energy and cost input but higher CO2 emissions.

Ni supported on MgO modified attapulgite as catalysts for hydrogen production from glycerol steam reforming

Xu Qingli et al.

Summary: A series of Mg-modified Ni/Attapulgite (ATP) catalysts were prepared for glycerol steam reforming, and the Ni/10MgO/ATP catalyst showed the best performance with high activity, hydrogen yield, and stability. The addition of Mg inhibited nickel sintering and carbon formation, enhancing the catalyst activity and longevity.

Preparation and evaluation of Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalysts promoted by alkaline earth metals in glycerol reforming with carbon dioxide

Masoud Tavanarad et al.

Summary: Catalysts with Ni supported on alkaline-earth oxides-promoted Al2O3 showed enhanced catalytic activity and stability in glycerol dry reforming reaction for hydrogen and carbon monoxide production. Adding various alkaline-earth oxides decreased Ni crystalline size and improved catalytic performance of the catalyst. Promoted catalysts, especially with SrO, exhibited superior stability during continuous operation.

Hydrogen rich products from waste HDPE/LDPE/PP/PET over Me/Ni-ZSM-5 catalysts combined with dolomite

Mohammed Al-asadi et al.

Summary: This study focused on the pyrolysis-gasification of waste polymers with and without catalysts in a one-stage tubular reactor at different temperatures. The results showed that in-situ generation of CO2 can enhance the production of syngas, and the use of dolomite can reduce carbon deposition on the catalyst surface. Various Me/Ni/ZSM-5 catalysts were tested, with Ce/Ni/ZSM-5 showing the most promising results for syngas production.
