The role of the substrate on the mechanical and thermal stability of Pd thin films during hydrogen (de)sorption

Neha Verma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanical and thermal stability of Pd thin films deposited on different substrates, revealing that film morphology and film-substrate interaction play significant roles in determining film stability. Columnar morphology was found to be resistant to embrittlement induced by hydride formation, while compact film morphology showed different transformation behavior depending on the rigidity of the intermediate layer and adherence to the substrate. The stress relaxation pathways in Pd thin films were shown to vary based on film microstructure and film-substrate interaction, with in-situ hydriding experiments demonstrating that a Pd film on a flexible PI intermediate layer exhibits freestanding behavior in addition to being clamped on a stiff SiO2/Si substrate.

Correlation among hydrogenation, magnetoelastic coupling, magnetic anisotropy, and magnetoresistance in magnetostrictive, hydrogen-absorbing palladium-cobalt alloy films for hydrogen sensing

Takashi Harumoto et al.

Summary: Hydrogen-absorbing magnetic alloy films, such as PdCo alloy films, are expected to be important in the next generation of hydrogen sensors. However, the effects of hydrogenation on these films are complex, with stress in the film determining its magnetic anisotropy. Hydrogenation leads to reduced magnetic anisotropy in the films.
