Impact of compound drops: a perspective

Nathan Blanken et al.

Summary: Researchers are increasingly focusing on the interaction of droplets with solid surfaces, paying more attention to 'complex' surfaces and droplets. A recent trend in research is the investigation of compound drop impact, which consists of two or more distinct continuous phases sharing common interfaces, surrounded by a third phase. This review addresses the fundamental aspects of compound drop impact and discusses challenges in experimental testing and numerical simulation of multiphase fluid systems.

Secondary atomization of water-in-oil emulsion drops impinging on a heated surface in the film boiling regime

Maxim Piskunov et al.

Summary: The study investigates secondary atomization resulting from the impact of a water-in-oil emulsion drop on a hot sapphire glass surface. It demonstrates that higher emulsion concentrations significantly reduce the size of secondary droplets.

Breakup characteristics of a single-droplet of water-in-oil emulsion impinging on a hot surface

Gyu Min Jang et al.

Summary: In this study, the breakup behaviors of n-dodecane water-in-oil emulsion structures on a hot surface were observed and analyzed by varying experimental parameters. The dynamic behaviors of the emulsion droplets after impinging were classified into five regimes, and a simple empirical model for numerical simulation was proposed to explain the breakup mechanism of water-in-oil emulsion on a hot surface.

Effect of rheology and interfacial tension on spreading of emulsion drops impacting a solid surface

M. Piskunov et al.

Summary: This study presents an experimental and theoretical investigation of Newtonian and non-Newtonian emulsion drop impact on a solid surface, revealing that existing models underestimate experimental data. The inclusion of capillary effects and careful consideration of rheological properties for Bingham plastic fluids are shown to be important. Modified models provide good agreement with measured data, highlighting the need for further research on the behavior of compound liquid drops impacting solid surfaces.
