All options, not silver bullets, needed to limit global warming to 1.5 °C: a scenario appraisal

Lila Warszawski et al.

Summary: Research shows that achieving the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius requires the use of multiple mitigation measures, and a careful assessment of the feasibility and implementation plans for these measures. A subset of 1.5 degrees Celsius scenarios has emissions ranging from 15-22 Gt CO2 in 2030, and the range for reaching net zero emissions is 2039-2061.

Alkalinity Generation Constraints on Basalt Carbonation for Carbon Dioxide Removal at the Gigaton-per-Year Scale

Benjamin M. Tutolo et al.

Summary: The world adds about 51 Gt of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere each year, and aggressive action is needed in the form of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and other technologies to prevent dire global consequences. Proposed CDR technologies should be capable of removing at least 1% of current annual emissions, about half a gigaton, from the atmosphere each year. Basalt carbonation coupled to direct air capture (DAC) shows promise, but there are challenges to implementing carbon removal technologies at the gigaton-per-year scale, such as maintaining carbonation efficiency and dealing with CO2 injection rates.

Geochemical evaluation of glauconite carbonation during sedimentary diagenesis

Qin Zhang et al.

Summary: Glauconite carbonation is a reduction-facilitated process in which glauconite is replaced by carbonate minerals during burial diagenesis, showing a significant change in the oxidation state of iron. This phenomenon indicates that glauconite may serve as a cation source for mineralizing anthropogenic CO2 in the subsurface.
