Computational modeling of three-dimensional mixed mode-I/II/III fatigue crack growth problems and experiments

Ali O. Ayhan et al.

Summary: The study conducted experiments and numerical simulations on mixed mode I/II/III fatigue crack growth, evaluating a new 3-D fracture criterion for its applicability in 3-D mixed mode fatigue problems. The developed criterion showed better predictability for crack growth surface under highly mixed mode conditions, reducing deviation from experimental surface compared to other criteria.

Probabilistic modeling of uncertainties in fatigue reliability analysis of turbine bladed disks

Xiao-Peng Niu et al.

Summary: The study developed a general framework for fatigue reliability analysis by coupling Latin hypercube sampling with FE analysis to describe the combined effects of multi-source uncertainties on turbine bladed disks. Sensitivity analysis on geometrical uncertainty of the bladed disk showed its critical influence on fatigue lifetime and reliability. The study also highlighted the importance of geometric uncertainty factor in fatigue reliability of engineering components.

Corrosion fatigue lifetime assessment of high-speed railway axle EA4T steel with artificial scratch

Yanan Hu et al.

Summary: The study found that railway EA4T alloy steel is very sensitive to chloride-containing environments, with cracking occurring in rotating bending tests, and scratched specimens having shorter lifetimes. The research also showed that the corrosive environment facilitates crack initiation without the need for corrosion pits.

Mixed-mode crack growth simulation in aviation engine compressor disk

V. Shlyannikov et al.

Summary: This study focuses on a mixed mode crack growth analysis of an aviation gas turbine engine (GTE) compressor disk based on simulation principles. Three geometries for simulation models of the GTE compressor disk are proposed, with biaxial loading conditions determined and numerically verified to reproduce the stress-strain state in critical zones during operation. Elastic-plastic fracture mechanical parameters are determined through a 3D full-size finite element method (FEM) analysis for the GTE compressor disk and simulation models, based on operating loading conditions.
