An integrated biorefinery to produce 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural and alternative fuel precursors from macroalgae and spent coffee grounds

Andre Prates Pereira et al.

Summary: An integrated macroalgal biorefinery was designed to produce HMF, HTL biocrude, and biochar. Blends of Ulva lactuca and spent coffee grounds were effective in HMF production, yielding higher amounts than separate components. Different macroalgal species showed large differences in yields, highlighting the importance of lipid content and C-6 sugar composition.
