Study fatigue crack initiation in TiB2/Al-Cu-Mg composite by in-situ SEM and X-ray microtomography

Jiwei Geng et al.

Summary: The study found that fatigue cracks in particle-reinforced aluminium matrix composites mostly initiate at multiple sites associated with TiB2 and second phases (S/θ), and only a few cracks are caused by matrix fracture close to high density dislocation zones around TiB2. The growth capability of initiated cracks depends on their stress intensity factors at the crack tip, with only cracks initiated from the largest-sized (S/θ + TiB2) cluster developing into main cracks. During main crack evolution, small cracks grow along slip traces and are hindered by grain boundaries and/or TiB2.

Secondary phase induced cracking initiation of high-speed railway gearbox

Yinan Jiao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of secondary-phase particles in crack initiation and propagation in a high-speed railway cast Al gearbox. It was found that secondary-phase particles such as eutectic Si, Fe-rich intermetallic phase, and Mg2Si particles cause inhomogeneously distributed micro-stress/strain, leading to stress concentration. The presence of these particles affects the fracture tendency during tensile tests.

Deformation-induced ultrafine grains near fatigue crack tip and correlative fatigue damage in Al matrix composite

Jiwei Geng et al.

Summary: The microstructural evolution and damage mechanisms near the fatigue crack tip in a TiB2/Al composite were investigated, revealing the formation of micro deformation bands and ultrafine grains. The study also highlighted the role of TiB2 particles in impeding the propagation of deformation bands and influencing crack growth.

Fatigue life prediction of in-situ TiB2/2024 aluminum matrix composite

Summary: Experimental studies showed that the addition of in-situ particles enhances the fatigue resistance of the composite material. A fatigue life prediction method based on a damage-coupled elastic-plastic constitutive model was developed, which achieved satisfactory accuracy in fatigue life predictions.
