Defects in additive manufactured metals and their effect on fatigue performance: A state-of-the-art review

Niloofar Sanaei et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing is emerging as an alternative method for producing unique and complex parts, with fatigue performance being a key consideration. Defects such as Lack of Fusion, porosities, and un-melted particles can affect fatigue performance, but can be minimized through process optimization and post-processing. Analytical techniques can reduce the need for costly fullscale testing for assessing reliability in fatigue performance.

Defects in Electron Beam Melted Ti-6Al-4V: Fatigue Life Prediction Using Experimental Data and Extreme Value Statistics

Viktor Sandell et al.

Summary: Electron beam melting is an additive manufacturing method for metals that offers opportunities for waste reduction and design freedom, but may suffer from material defects leading to scatter in fatigue performance. This study shows that probabilistic modeling using XCT data can provide accurate and conservative estimates of fatigue life, and requires minimal material volume for calibration.

Formulation of Strain Fatigue Criterion Based on Complex Numbers

Tadeusz Lagoda et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method to combine different types of strains by adopting a complex number system, defining normal strain as the real part and shear strain as the imaginary part. This approach transforms simple load states into an expression for equivalent strain identical to previously proposed criteria.

A novel approach based on the elastoplastic fatigue damage and machine learning models for life prediction of aerospace alloy parts fabricated by additive manufacturing

Zhixin Zhan et al.

Summary: A new method combining continuum damage mechanics theory and machine learning models is proposed to study fatigue damage behavior of AM aerospace alloys. Over 500 sets of data were used to train ML models for fatigue life prediction, which were compared with experimental results to verify the novel method. Parametric studies were discussed to investigate the trend of predicted performance and fatigue life with important parameters of ML models.

Directional fatigue behaviour of maraging steel grade 300 produced by laser powder bed fusion

Klas Solberg et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fatigue behavior of maraging steel grade 300 produced by laser beam powder bed fusion, focusing on surfaces built from both upward and downward directions. It was found that downward-facing surfaces had high surface roughness, while upward-facing surfaces had wavy surfaces. The fatigue behavior was found to be correlated with build orientation and surface roughness.
