Water management characteristics of electrospun micro-porous layer in PEMFC under normal temperature and cold start conditions

Chaoming Li et al.

Summary: Electrospun MPL showed better performance under high relative humidities at 70 degrees Celsius, reducing mass transport losses and improving fuel cell efficiency. In cold start conditions, electrospun MPL may facilitate water removal from the catalyst layer, leading to longer electricity generation in fuel cells.

Effects of thickness and hydrophobicity of double microporous layer on the performance in proton exchange membrane fuel cells

Guangyi Lin et al.

Summary: This paper designed a multi-layer gas diffusion layer and investigated the effects of thickness and hydrophobicity on fuel cell performance. The results showed that thickness adjustment is more favorable for water discharge under high humidity, while gradient hydrophobic design is more effective under low humidity.

Experimental and computational study of the microporous layer and hydrophobic treatment in the gas diffusion layer of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell

Mrittunjoy Sarker et al.

Summary: Enabling fuel cell operation at high current density requires addressing liquid water management issues, with PTFE impregnation and MPL showing potential performance improvements. Studies using experimental and computational techniques have revealed the effects of these materials, and a model has been developed to simulate fuel cell performance.

Microporous Layer Containing CeO2-Doped 3D Graphene Foam for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells at Varying Operating Conditions

Liang Chen et al.

Summary: To improve the interfacial mass-transfer efficiency, microporous layers (MPLs) containing CeO2 nanorods and the CeO2 nano-network were prepared for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). CeO2-doped 3D-GF improved the reaction kinetics of the cathode effectively and worked as the water receiver to prevent the dehydration of MEAs at dry operating condition, while also providing the pathway for water removal at a high current density or humid operating condition.

A novel hydrophilic-modified gas diffusion layer for proton exchange membrane fuel cells operating in low humidification

Zhicheng Liu et al.

Summary: A novel hydrophilic-modified gas diffusion layer (GDL) with Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) has been fabricated to improve the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) under low humidity. The addition of PAN in the cathode GDL significantly increases the power density by 30% under low humidity, without affecting the performance under full humidity.
