Digital twin-based progress monitoring management model through reality capture to extended reality technologies (DRX)

Summary: The purpose of this research is to develop a generic framework for automated construction progress monitoring through reality capture to extended reality (RC-to-XR). IDEF0 data modeling method is used to integrate reality capturing technologies, such as BIM, DT, and XR, and structural equation modeling (SEM) method is used to validate the proposed framework. The findings validate the positive impact and importance of technology integration for reliable, real-time, transparent, and digital construction progress monitoring. The practical implications include accurate data capturing, precise analysis, visualization in a real scale environment, information flow and communication facilitation, predictive capabilities, digitalization of construction information, and optimized decision-making process.

Summary: Virtual Reality (VR) and Building Information Modelling (BIM) have been steadily growing and found practical applications in the AEC/FM industry. However, data exchange between BIM and VR is complex and time consuming. This research proposes a novel method to enable efficient interoperability of BIM and VR, including geometry and semantic data extraction from BIM models for optimized import into VR environments. The method was demonstrated through a building case study showcasing short transfer time, high quality rendering, and geo-semantic data exchange for design and construction.
