Counseling and surveillance of obstetrical risks for female childhood, adolescent, and young adult cancer survivors: recommendations from the International Late Effects of Childhood Cancer Guideline Harmonization Group

Anne-Lotte Lolkje Femke van der Kooi et al.

Summary: Female childhood, adolescent, and young adult cancer survivors are at increased risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes related to their cancer treatment. Clinical practice guidelines are essential in identifying and addressing these risks, but national guidelines are currently lacking. The International Late Effects of Childhood Cancer Guideline Harmonization Group offers recommendations for counseling and surveillance to enhance evidence-based obstetrical care for this population.

Fertility preservation in women for medical and social reasons: Oocytes vs ovarian tissue

Marie-Madeleine Dolmans et al.

Summary: Approximately 10% of cancers occur in women under the age of 45, with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and bone marrow transplantation curing more than 90% of cases but potentially leading to premature ovarian insufficiency. Fertility preservation may also be necessary for benign diseases or social reasons. Oocyte vitrification and ovarian tissue cryopreservation are two main strategies for preserving fertility in female cancer patients.

Fertility-Related Concerns and Uncertainties in Adolescent and Young Adult Childhood Cancer Survivors

Fabrine Aguilar Jardim et al.

Summary: This study reveals the fertility-related concerns and uncertainties in adolescent and young adult childhood cancer survivors, emphasizing the importance of understanding fertility risks, emotional impact of infertility, sharing risks with partners, and the need for fertility information. The findings highlight the importance of organizing survivor services that address reproductive concerns and uncertainties to meet the long-term follow-up demands of this specific population.

Possible modification of BRSK1 on the risk of alkylating chemotherapy-related reduced ovarian function

Anne-Lotte L. F. Van der Kooi et al.

Summary: The study found that female childhood cancer survivors carrying a variant in the BRSK1 gene have an increased likelihood of reduced ovarian function after high-dose alkylating chemotherapy. Further research may help in providing personalized counseling regarding assisted reproductive technology and fertility preservation procedures.

Oncofertility care for newly diagnosed girls with cancer in a national pediatric oncology setting, the first full year experience from the Princess Maxima Center, the PEARL study

M. E. Madeleine van der Perk et al.

Summary: This study aimed to timely identify and counsel girls with high risk of gonadal damage, and provide fertility preservation through a standard oncofertility care plan and risk stratification tool. The experience gained from this study may be valuable for other pediatric oncology centers to optimize their oncofertility care plans.

In vitro growth and maturation of primordial follicles and immature oocytes

Summary: The cryopreservation of ovarian tissue is widely used to preserve fertility in high-risk females. Besides transplantation, in vitro maturation of oocytes from ovarian tissue can also be used to restore fertility safely in cases where transplantation is contraindicated.

Effect of Genetic Variation in CYP450 on Gonadal Impairment in a European Cohort of Female Childhood Cancer Survivors, Based on a Candidate Gene Approach: Results from the PanCareLIFE Study

M. E. Madeleine van der Perk et al.

Summary: In this study, genetic variations in CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 enzymes were found to have significant impact on chemotherapy-induced gonadotoxicity in female childhood cancer survivors receiving alkylating agents. CYP3A4*3 variant was associated with lower AMH levels, while CYP2B6*2 variant showed a protective effect on AMH levels. Identification of these risk-contributing genetic variants may help improve personalized counseling on infertility risks and fertility preservation options for patients.

Estimated clinical benefit of combining highly conformal target volumes with Volumetric-Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) versus conventional flank irradiation in pediatric renal tumors

Joeri Mul et al.

Summary: The study shows that using highly conformal target volumes combined with VMAT treatment in pediatric renal tumor cases may provide more clinical benefits compared to traditional AP/PA photon beam therapy, such as reducing the dose to organs at risk.
