Injection molding versus extrusion in the manufacturing of soy protein-based bioplastics with zinc incorporated

Mercedes Jimenez-Rosado et al.

Summary: The study aimed to develop soy protein-based bioplastics with zinc sulfate by extrusion and compare with injection molding. Results showed that glycerol can improve the mechanical strength of bioplastics but lead to faster zinc release. Processing parameters can be adjusted to achieve better mechanical strength and slower zinc release.

Plasticization of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) with triethyl citrate: Thermal and mechanical properties, morphology, and kinetics of crystallization

Rodrigo T. Umemura et al.

Summary: In this study, PHB and TEC were blended to investigate the effects of TEC as a plasticizer on the properties of PHB. Increasing the mass fraction of TEC led to gradual changes in mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of PHB, with TEC acting as an efficient plasticizer. The presence of TEC reduced the glass transition and melting temperatures of PHB, expanded the processing window of temperature, and influenced the crystallization kinetics and morphology of PHB.

A review of biodegradable plastics to biodegradable microplastics: Another ecological threat to soil environments?

Meng Qin et al.

Summary: Biodegradable plastics are considered as a promising substitute for non-degradable plastics that lead to serious pollution, but not all biodegradable plastics are fully degradable naturally. Some may disintegrate into microplastics at a faster rate than conventional plastics, posing a new threat to soil environments. Researchers are now investigating the potential adverse effects of biodegradable microplastics on soil ecosystems, suggesting that they may not be a complete solution to the issue of plastic pollution.

Summary: Novel PHA copolymers of (2R, 3R)-3-hydroxy-2-methylbutyrate (3H2MB) and (R)-3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB) were biosynthesized with different comonomer compositions, leading to copolymers with narrow compositional distributions, faster crystallization behavior, and closer melting temperatures to 3HB homopolymer. The copolymerization of 3H2MB and 3HB is valuable for designing new PHA materials with desirable properties.
