Turning food waste to antibacterial and biocompatible fungal chitin/chitosan monofilaments

Sofie E. Svensson et al.

Summary: In this study, monofilaments were produced from the cell wall of Rhizopus delemar, a zygomycete fungus grown on bread waste. The monofilaments contained chitosan, chitin, and other carbohydrates, and showed significant antimicrobial activity against both Gram+ and Gram- bacteria. Furthermore, the monofilaments exhibited no cytotoxicity. These findings suggest that the fungal monofilaments could be utilized as sustainable biomedical textiles using abundant food waste.

Characteristics of hybrid chitosan/phospholipid-sterol, peptide coatings on plasma activated PEEK polymer

K. Przykaza et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a method of obtaining multi-component surface coatings on PEEK polymer using plasma techniques and chitosan to achieve sterility and antiseptic properties. The use of ternary Langmuir-Blodgett films also significantly changes surface polarity. Physico-chemical properties of the obtained films were tested on water subphase and transferred to solid PEEK polymer surfaces, where changes in wettability and surface free energy were determined. Additionally, surface chemistry was studied using time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry.
