Fucoidan Structure and Its Impact on Glucose Metabolism: Implications for Diabetes and Cancer Therapy

Blessing Mabate et al.

Summary: Fucoidans are complex polysaccharides derived from brown seaweeds with reported bioactive characteristics such as antidiabetic and anticancer properties. However, the understanding of the structure and biological activity of fucoidan remains unclear. Limited data exists on the dual chemotherapeutic efforts for the link between diabetes and cancer.

A fucoidan from Sargassum fusiforme with novel structure and its regulatory effects on intestinal microbiota in high-fat diet-fed mice

Xue Liu et al.

Summary: A novel structure of fucoidan SFP was extracted from Sargassum fusiforme, with regulatory effects on intestinal microbiota in high-fat diet-fed mice. It exhibited good hypolipidemic effects, especially in regulating high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, non-esterified fatty acid levels, and lipase activity. Additionally, SFP had certain effects on the richness and diversity of intestinal microbiota.

Gut microbiota-derived inosine from dietary barley leaf supplementation attenuates colitis through PPARγ signaling activation

Daotong Li et al.

Summary: Our study demonstrates that the gut microbiota-inosine-A(2A)R/PPAR gamma axis is crucial in maintaining intestinal homeostasis and may offer a novel approach for preventing colitis through manipulation of gut microbial purine metabolite. Additionally, dietary supplementation of barley leaf improves intestinal mucosal barrier functions and induces metabolic reprogramming in colonic tissues by enhancing the glycolysis process. Furthermore, the enrichment of microbiota-derived purine metabolite inosine from BL supplementation activates PPAR gamma signaling in human colon epithelial cells.

Summary: The study revealed that UPP has anti-diabetic effects, improving blood sugar levels, insulin resistance, glucose tolerance, dyslipidemia, and organ damage in T2DM rats. The mechanisms of action include regulating intestinal microbiota composition, activating the IRS/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway, and affecting gene expression related to glucose and lipid metabolism.
