Development of biodegradable webs of PLA/PCL blends prepared via electrospinning: Morphological, chemical, and thermal characterization

Janset Oztemur et al.

Summary: Biodegradable polymers play a crucial role in tissue engineering applications, with the study demonstrating that fibrous webs produced with different biopolymers affect the properties of scaffolds. By adjusting polymer concentrations and solvent types, different fiber structures can be obtained, with analysis showing unique characteristics of these fibers.

The effect of ball milling on birch, pine, reed, walnut shell enzymatic hydrolysis recalcitrance and the structure of the isolated residual enzyme lignin

Zhiwen Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that using two or more steps of enzymatic hydrolysis can reduce the ball milling time to achieve similar carbohydrate removal while avoiding excessive decrease in lignin molecular weight. The recalcitrance towards increased enzyme hydrolysis activity by ball milling was different for the four representative biomasses, with the highest difficulty coming from walnut shells. Overall, there is a clear synergy between enzymatic treatment and ball milling efficiency to isolate lignin with high yield, high native linkage content, purity, and minimal MW reduction.

Isolating High Antimicrobial Ability Lignin From Bamboo Kraft Lignin by Organosolv Fractionation

Jinyan Yun et al.

Summary: In this study, lignin fractions with lower molecular weight and higher phenolic hydroxyl content were obtained through organosolv fractionation, showing excellent antioxidation and antimicrobial activities. The lignin fractions inhibited the growth of both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria by destroying the cell wall, with the fraction with the lowest molecular weight and highest phenolic hydroxyl content demonstrating the best performance. Additionally, the lignin fraction was able to ameliorate Escherichia coli-induced diarrhea damages in mice.

Graphene oxide crosslinker for the enhancement of mechanical properties of polylactic acid

Majharul Islam Sujan et al.

Summary: A strategy of improving the mechanical properties of PLA polymer by introducing a GO-based crosslinker was proposed in this study. Experimental results showed that adding 0.3% of GO-LA crosslinker increased the compressive modulus of GO-C-PLA by nine times and the compressive strength to 46 MPa, suggesting the potential use of this method in various polycondensation polymers.
