Tuning oxygenated functional groups on biochar for water pollution control: A critical review

Lichun Dai et al.

Summary: Biochar has gained attention in water pollution control due to its tunable physico-chemical properties, especially the oxygenated functional groups (OFGs) which act as key active sites for pollutant removal through adsorption and redox reactions. Various strategies for tuning OFGs on biochar have been explored, such as in-situ and ex-situ oxidation, as well as grafting carboxyl groups via reactions like cycloaddition/acylation, leading to enhanced performance in pollutant removal.

Zirun Wang et al.

Summary: The novel composite of MnFe2O4@CPB demonstrated excellent adsorption and photo-catalytic degradation performance for MO removal, attributed to hydrogen bonding and pi-pi interactions between MO and MnFe2O4@CPB. The abundant surface functional groups of CPB facilitated the generation of hydroxyl radicals under H2O2, enabling MnFe2O4@CPB to maintain great removal performance in visible LED light/H2O2 system. The redox catalytic cycles of Fe (II)/Fe (III) and Mn (III)/Mn (II) were realized under visible LED light, showing promising potential in wastewater treatment.

Insight into heavy metals (Cr and Pb) complexation by dissolved organic matters from biochar: Impact of zero-valent iron

Lixia Jia et al.

Summary: This study investigated the immobilization of HMs (Cr and Pb) by DOM derived from biochar in nitrate and HMs co-contaminated groundwater in the presence and absence of zero-valent iron (Fe) through batch experiments. The results showed that chemical reduction was the primary way to removal HMs in batch-Fe systems, with different removal efficiencies of Cr and Pb in biochar aqueous phase. Additionally, the observed DOM components with higher aromaticity and humification after adding Cr and Pb indicated the complexation of DOM-HMs through the analysis of adsorption and fluorescence indices.

Chitosan modifications for adsorption of pollutants-A review

Ismaila Olalekan Saheed et al.

Summary: Modification of chitosan through methods such as grafting and cross-linking is a promising approach for removing organic and inorganic pollutants from aqueous medium. The performance of modified chitosan for adsorption of pollutants depends largely on the modification method adopted, materials used, and adsorption experimental conditions. Cross-linking is commonly used for improving the stability of chitosan, although it may decrease adsorption capacity, but recent works have shown enhancement through grafting or incorporation of solid adsorbents before cross-linking.

Adsorption of metals from oil sands process water (OSPW) under natural pH by sludge-based Biochar/Chitosan composite

Junying Song et al.

Summary: In this study, a sludge-based biochar/chitosan composite was successfully prepared and showed excellent removal efficiency for metals (Cr, Cu, Se and Pb) in oil sands process water (OSPW). The enhanced removal ability of the composite was attributed to its improved specific surface area, pore volume, and functional groups such as NH2, -OH and oxygen containing groups. The adsorption process was best described by the Freundlich model, pseudo second order, and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models, indicating that chemical adsorption played a dominant role in the removal process.
