Effects of nisin and EDTA on morphology and properties of thermoplastic starch and PBAT biodegradable films for meat packaging

Pattarin Leelaphiwat et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that PBAT/TPS films containing nisin and EDTA effectively inhibited lipid degradation in pork tissues, delayed meat discoloration, and preserved the quality of packaged pork. The interaction between nisin, EDTA, and polymers altered the crystallinity and barrier properties of the films, functionalizing biodegradable food packaging to inactivate microorganisms.

Plasticized hydroxypropyl cassava starch blended PBAT for improved clarity blown films: Morphology and properties

Kiattichai Wadaugsorn et al.

Summary: Blending of plasticized hydroxypropyl cassava thermoplastic starch (TPS) with polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) via blown-film extrusion was studied. Higher DS values were found to increase film clarity and glossy surface, reduce crystallinity, improve hydrophilicity, mechanical properties and compatibility between PBAT and TPS. Modified DS in hydroxypropyl starch efficiently improved clarity, mechanical and barrier properties of bioplastic packaging.

Optimizing interfacial adhesion in PBAT/PLA nanocomposite for biodegradable packaging films

Shuo Qiu et al.

Summary: The biodegradable films made of PBAT and PLA, incorporating POSS(epoxy)8 as a reactive compatibilizer, showed improved interfacial adhesion, mechanical properties, and gas permeability. The addition of POSS(epoxy)8 during film production can offer a simple strategy for producing high-performance biodegradable plastic packaging films.

Biodegradable Poly(Butylene Adipate-Co-Terephthalate) and Thermoplastic Starch-Blended TiO2 Nanocomposite Blown Films as Functional Active Packaging of Fresh Fruit

Danaya Phothisarattana et al.

Summary: The incorporation of TiO2 nanoparticles into biodegradable polymer packaging improves the preservation and shelf-life of fresh produce by enhancing ethylene-scavenging activity and mechanical strength. Interaction between TiO2 and TPS phase increases amorphous starch content and hydrogen bonding in the film packaging, while having a negligible chemical interaction with the PBAT component. Homogeneously dispersed fine TiO2 nanoparticles increase mechanical strength and reduce permeability to oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor, leading to effective oxygen-scavenging activity in the packaging.

High-Throughput Fabrication of Antibacterial Starch/PBAT/AgNPs@SiO2 Films for Food Packaging

Shengxue Zhou et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial films based on starch, poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), and AgNPs@SiO2 were produced with good compatibility and antibacterial activities. The composite films loaded with 1 wt% AgNPs@SiO2 showed nearly 90% inhibition efficiency on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and exhibited extended shelf life for peaches and nectarines. The high-throughput production method and strong antibacterial activities make them promising for commercial applications as antimicrobial packaging materials.

Antifungal packaging of sorbate and benzoate incorporated biodegradable films for fresh noodles

Jane Wangprasertkul et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the incorporation of 3% and 6% sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate in poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) and thermoplastic starch blends can produce antimicrobial biodegradable packaging materials. Blends containing 6% PS formed homogeneous film microstructures with the highest transparency, mechanical and barrier properties, effectively delaying the growth of Aspergillus niger and Rhizopus sp. while reducing total viable count, yeast, and mold.

Effect of gelatin bloom values on the physicochemical properties of starch/gelatin-beeswax composite films fabricated by extrusion blowing

Yue Cheng et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of different gelatin Bloom values on the properties of starch/gelatin-beeswax films fabricated by extrusion blowing, finding that higher Bloom values enhanced physicochemical properties and influenced water solubility and thermal stability. This indicated that gelatins with appropriate Bloom values could be utilized to produce films with desirable properties.

Effect of lipids with different physical state on the physicochemical properties of starch/gelatin edible films prepared by extrusion blowing

Yue Cheng et al.

Summary: Different physical state lipids (rapeseed oil, shortening, beeswax) have varied effects on the physicochemical properties of starch/gelatin blown films, with rapeseed oil promoting starch melting and fracturing while beeswax and shortening inhibit hydrogen bond formation. The addition of lipids enhances surface hydrophobicity, strength, and water resistance properties of the films.
