The effect of laser surface structuring on the bond performance of aluminum/epoxy adhesive joints was investigated, and compared with chemical treatments. The results showed that laser treatment can provide superior bond performance.
Laser ablation can be incorporated for surface treatment of adhesively bonded joints with environment benefit as compared to chemical treatments. In the present research, laser surface structuring with different patterns were implemented on the aluminum substrates. The effect of laser texturing pattern on the bond performance of aluminum/epoxy adhesive joint was investigated by undertaking lap shear, modes I and II interlaminar fracture tests. The laser surface structuring developed micro-nano topography on the metal adherent and enhanced the interfacial area, mechanical interlocks and cohesive failure in the interface of bonded joint. The X-pattern with six successive passes of laser ablation offered the highest fraction of cohesive failure, lap shear strength, modes I and II strain energy release rates. In addition, the results of laser surface treatment were compared with those of an alkali-acid chemical treatment on the Al adherent. The laser treatment as compared to the chemical treatment presented superior bond performance in the aluminum/epoxy adhesive joints.
