Utility of the CHA2DS2-VASc score for predicting ischaemic stroke in patients with or without atrial fibrillation: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Tariq Jamal Siddiqi et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis suggests that the discrimination power of the CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc score in predicting ischaemic stroke is modest, and is similar in the presence or absence of NVAF. More accurate stroke prediction models are thus needed for the NVAF population.

Boundary-Condition Analysis of an Idealized Left Atrium Model

Summary: Atrial fibrillation can lead to thrombus formation and thromboembolic events. Researchers use computational fluid dynamics and in vitro flow validation to help determine the most appropriate treatment strategies. Capturing the main flow features and conducting Particle Image Velocimetry measurements can provide detailed velocity field information.

Demonstration of Patient-Specific Simulations to Assess Left Atrial Appendage Thrombogenesis Risk

Manuel Garcia-Villalba et al.

Summary: This study investigated the personalized risk stratification of stroke in AF patients and how LA anatomy and function affect the risk of LAA thrombosis. Through CFD analysis, it was found that LAAT/TIA-pos patients had significant alterations in LAA blood residence time and kinetic energy compared to LAAT/TIA-neg patients. Additionally, the different functions of LA were shown to distinctly impact LA and LAA hemodynamics.

4D flow evaluation of blood non-Newtonian behavior in left ventricle flow analysis

Alessandra Riva et al.

Summary: Blood is commonly modeled as a Newtonian fluid, but this assumption may not hold true for the complex flow dynamics in the left ventricle. This study investigated the impact of different viscosity models on quantifying blood energetics, showing that accounting for non-Newtonian behavior can enhance the accuracy of intracardiac energetics assessment. The findings suggest that individualized consideration of non-Newtonian blood behavior may serve as a non-invasive index to distinguish between healthy and pathological left ventricles.

Subject-Specific Calculation of Left Atrial Appendage Blood-Borne Particle Residence Time Distribution in Atrial Fibrillation

Soroosh Sanatkhani et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether the distribution of blood-borne particles in the LAA and a quantitative index of LAA 3D geometry can provide independent information to stratify stroke risk in AF patients. Computational fluid dynamics analysis revealed that the LAA appearance complexity index and LAA mean residence time varied significantly across different CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc scores and LAA morphologies, indicating their potential to enhance risk assessment in AF patients.
