MMP-9 Levels and NaOCl Lavage in Randomized Trial on Direct Pulp Capping

N. Ballal et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that the levels of neutrophil gelatinase 9 (MMP-9)/total protein (TP) and NaOCl lavage significantly influenced pulp survival in cariously exposed and directly capped teeth, while mild preoperative discomfort did not have an impact.

A macroscopic and histological analysis of radiographically well-defined deep and extremely deep carious lesions: carious lesion characteristics as indicators of the level of bacterial penetration and pulp response

S. Demant et al.

Summary: The study found significant associations between a closed environment (involving 1-2 surfaces) and the presence of biofilm, retrograde demineralization, and light-colored demineralized dentine in caries activity variables. Radiographically defined deep lesions tended to have bacteria only in the primary dentine, while extremely deep carious lesions tended to have bacteria in contact with the pulpal tissue, as well as inflammatory infiltrate and partial pulp necrosis. Hyperplastic pulps were only seen in extremely deep lesions.

The global prevalence of apical periodontitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis

C. S. Tiburcio-Machado et al.

Summary: Half of the adult population worldwide have at least one tooth with apical periodontitis. The prevalence of AP is greater in samples from the dental care services, but it is also high amongst community representative samples from the general population. The present findings should bring the attention of health policymakers, medical and dental communities to the hidden burden of endodontic disease in the population worldwide.

Efficacy of direct pulp capping for management of cariously exposed pulps in permanent teeth: a systematic review and meta-analysis

S. Cushley et al.

Summary: The study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the outcome of direct pulp capping in mature permanent teeth with a cariously exposed pulp and a clinical diagnosis of reversible pulpitis. The results showed that mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) had better success rates compared to calcium hydroxide, with Biodentine also showing promising outcomes. However, the evidence was based on studies of poor methodological quality.

Factors Associated with Extraction following Root Canal Filling in Adults

H. Fransson et al.

Summary: The aim of the study was to identify factors associated with extractions within 5 years after root fillings in the adult Swedish population. Various individual- and tooth-specific variables were found to be associated with extractions, with restoration type and composite restorations showing high odds ratios for extractions. Further research is needed to understand the reasons for extractions.

Outcome measures to assess the effectiveness of endodontic treatment for pulpitis and apical periodontitis for use in the development of European Society of Endodontology (ESE) S3 level clinical practice guidelines: a protocol

H. F. Duncan et al.

Summary: The European Society of Endodontology is developing S3Level Clinical Practice Guidelines for the treatment of pulpal and apical disease. Standardized core outcomes and minimum follow-up times specific to each outcome measure are essential for the homogenous review process. This project aims to define appropriate clinician and patient-reported outcomes, which will be used in subsequent literature analyses to assess the effectiveness of endodontic treatment.

A protocol for the Development of Core Outcome Sets for Endodontic Treatment modalities (COSET): an international consensus process

I. A. El Karim et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop a core outcome set (COS) that includes patient-reported outcomes and clinician-centred measures for various endodontic treatment modalities. The COS will be established through a consensus process involving key stakeholders and will help standardise outcome measurement in endodontic research and practice.

Vital pulp therapy in carious pulp-exposed permanent teeth: an umbrella review

Dephne Jack Xin Leong et al.

Summary: The umbrella review found that partial pulpotomy and full pulpotomy had higher success rates compared to direct pulp capping in carious pulp-exposed permanent human teeth, with conflicting results for prognostic factors. Factors such as restorative material, age, and study type seemed to have minimal impact on treatment outcomes.

Mohammad Sabeti et al.

Summary: This systematic review evaluated the safety and efficacy of vital pulp therapy using different capping materials and techniques, finding a high success rate of 93% when using MTA or CSM. Various factors such as etiologies, procedure types, developmental stages of teeth, and preoperative diagnoses did not significantly influence treatment outcomes. However, the overall quality of evidence was deemed low.
