Ultrasonic-assisted rapid cold welding of bulk metallic glasses

Zhiyuan Huang et al.

Summary: This study presents a method of ultrasonic-assisted rapid cold welding of metallic glasses without using any additives, achieving stable bonding of MG interface under high-frequency ultrasonic vibration, low temperature and low stress conditions. The ultrasonic technology accelerates atomic diffusion process, enabling rapid bonding of different compositions of MGs and potential for tuning new materials with new performance.

Interface design enabled manufacture of giant metallic glasses

Hongzhen Li et al.

Summary: Developing materials with excellent properties has always been a relentless pursuit of mankind. Metallic glasses (MGs) could be the ideal metallic materials if their size could be scaled up to be comparable to traditional metals. Various methods have been attempted to address this challenge, including thermodynamics-based alloy, 3D printing, and the recent artificial intelligence-guided optimal alloy. In this study, a simple and flexible approach was demonstrated to manufacture giant MGs (GMGs) with diameters more than 100 mm through the thermo-joining process. The jointed GMG samples exhibit almost the same performance as the as-cast ones, and the ability to manufacture complex 3D components such as the Chinese Zodiacs was also demonstrated. This approach may overcome the longstanding problem of glass forming ability (GFA) limitations in alloy systems and pave the way for fabricating size unlimited MGs.

Metallic glue for designing composite materials with tailorable properties

Jianan Fu et al.

Summary: The study proposes a novel method of using metallic glass as glue to bond different materials together, allowing for manual regulation of the mechanical, magnetic, and electrical performances of the composites by adjusting the ratios of metallic glass glue and admixture. Additionally, porous structures can be obtained and adjusted through dissolving a soluble admixture in water. This approach not only provides a new pathway for synthesizing composite materials with tailorable properties, but also opens up possibilities for multi-functional metal-containing composites.
