Delayed Adaptive Radiation among New Zealand Stream Fishes: Joint Estimation of Divergence Time and Trait Evolution in a Newly Delineated Island Species Flock

Christine E. Thacker et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel case of an island species flock of freshwater fishes with a different tempo of adaptive history than popular evolutionary model systems. The New Zealand Gobiomorphus gudgeons formed a monophyletic assemblage, but their radiation did not fully occur in freshwater habitats until more than 10 million years after the lineage invaded the islands. This shift in speciation rate was not accompanied by an acceleration in morphological evolution in the freshwater crown clade, but was correlated with changes in head pores, scales, and egg size.

Evidence and description of a nursery habitat for the recently reclassified stingray Styracura schmardae from The Bahamas

O. R. O'Shea et al.

Summary: The study revealed the presence of a nursery environment for the Atlantic chupare stingray in South Eleuthera, The Bahamas, with findings of 190 capture events, 95% of which were immature individuals with an average residence time of 243 days. This suggests important implications for the effective management and conservation efforts for this species.

Biogeography of the neotropical freshwater stingrays (Myliobatiformes: Potamotrygoninae) reveals effects of continent-scale paleogeographic change and drainage evolution

Joao Pedro Fontenelle et al.

Summary: This study investigates the biogeographical and chronological patterns of diversification for the marine-derived Neotropical freshwater stingrays. It reveals the origin of Potamotrygoninae in the early/middle Miocene in the upper Amazon region, with subsequent dispersals and colonization of adjacent basins. The burst of potamotrygonine diversification 5 million years ago is speculated to be related to the modern channelization of the Amazon Basin.

Molecular phylogeny for the Neotropical freshwater stingrays (Myliobatiformes: Potamotrygoninae) reveals limitations of traditional taxonomy

Joao Pedro Fontenelle et al.

Summary: The study presents a comprehensive molecular phylogeny of Neotropical freshwater stingrays, suggesting unresolved taxonomy and evolutionary relationships within Potamotrygoninae. The research identifies a core Potamotrygon clade within Potamotrygon + Plesiotrygon clade, where specimens of widespread species do not form monophyletic lineages.

Convergent patterns of adaptive radiation between island and mainland Anolis lizards

Jonathan M. Huie et al.

Summary: The study aims to uncover convergent and divergent patterns of diversification in Anolis lizards on the Greater Antillean islands and in Central and South America. It found that mainland Anolis exhibit similar ecologies and morphologies to those on the islands, suggesting exceptional morphological convergence between the island and mainland faunas. However, regional differences and historical contingencies can lead to replicate yet variable radiations, indicating that replicated radiations occur more frequently beyond island settings than previously recognized.
