A Versatile Reporter System To Monitor Virus-Infected Cells and Its Application to Dengue Virus and SARS-CoV-2

Felix Pahmeier et al.

Summary: Positive-strand RNA viruses, such as flaviviruses and coronaviruses, have caused major disease outbreaks globally, highlighting the need for research to limit virus spread and reduce disease severity. A reporter system has been developed to visualize and identify cells infected with dengue virus or SARS-CoV-2, which can be used for live cell imaging and screening of antiviral compounds. This modular system offers flexibility and can be adapted to study various viruses, providing a valuable tool for studying viral replication and developing antivirals.

Clustered rapid induction of apoptosis limits ZIKV and DENV-2 proliferation in the midguts of Aedes aegypti

Jasmine B. Ayers et al.

Summary: Ayers et al. found rapid induction of apoptosis in the midgut of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes within 2 hours of infection by dengue and Zika viruses, and inhibiting apoptosis led to increased virus proliferation in the midgut, suggesting rapid induction of apoptosis as an innate immune mechanism mediating midgut infection in this mosquito vector.

Transgenic refractory Aedes aegypti lines are resistant to multiple serotypes of dengue virus

Wei-Liang Liu et al.

Summary: Using the mariner Mos1 transposase, transgenic Aedes aegypti mosquitoes were created to express virus-specific miRNA hairpins that can block DENV replication, resulting in significantly lower infection rates and viral titers for most DENV serotypes. This approach was effective in reducing viral transmission and silencing a majority of the DENV genome, showing promise for controlling a dengue fever epidemic.
