Deep Eutectic Solvents: A Review of Fundamentals and Applications

Benworth B. Hansen et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) exhibit significant depressions in melting points and tunable physicochemical properties, but there is still a lack of predictive understanding of their microscopic mechanisms and structure-property relationships. Research on complex hydrogen bonding is crucial for a deeper understanding and development of fundamental frameworks for DESs.

On the Coordination Chemistry of the lanthanum(III) Nitrate Salt in EAN/MeOH Mixtures

Valentina Migliorati et al.

Summary: The La3+ solvation structure in the MeOH/EAN mixtures shows great adaptability to changes in composition, transitioning from a 10-fold bicapped square antiprism geometry where nitrate anions only act as monodentate ligands to a 12-coordinated icosahedral structure in pure EAN where the nitrate anions bind the La3+ cation in both mono- and bidentate modes.

Self-assembly of ionic and non-ionic surfactants in type IV cerium nitrate and urea based deep eutectic solvent

Iva Manasi et al.

Summary: Understanding and manipulating micelle morphology in Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs) is crucial for utilizing surfactants effectively. Recent studies have shown that the self-assembly of surfactants in DESs influences the size, shape, and morphology of micelles formed. Different types of surfactants form distinct micelle shapes in DESs, with the mechanism behind these differences being related to the interactions between the surfactant molecules and the solvent components.

Transition from molecular- to nano-scale segregation in a deep eutectic solvent - water mixture

Matteo Busato et al.

Summary: The nanostructure changes of a deep eutectic solvent (DES) formed by choline chloride (ChCl) and sesamol in 1:3 ratio upon water addition have been studied. Small inhomogeneities in sub-nanometer scale are formed for water/DES molar ratios up to 6, followed by segregation to higher scale structures. High water concentration leads to water segregation from sesamol, confining most of ChCl in the aqueous region.

Fate of a Deep Eutectic Solvent upon Cosolvent Addition: Choline Chloride-Sesamol 1:3 Mixtures with Methanol

Matteo Busato et al.

Summary: The addition of MeOH into the DES increases the number of Cl-MeOH hydrogen bonds without affecting the interactions between other molecules. This mechanism dominates up to a certain MeOH/DES molar ratio before the scattering profile gradually decreases towards the signal of pure MeOH.

Anatomy of a deep eutectic solvent: structural properties of choline chloride : sesamol 1: 3 compared to reline

Matteo Busato et al.

Summary: The study found strong hydrogen bonds between choline chloride and sesamol molecules in the ChCl:sessamol DES, while choline-urea and urea-urea interactions were more significant in reline. The structural arrangement in the ChCl:sessamol DES may enhance pi-pi interactions between sesamol molecules and aromatic species, potentially explaining the high separation rates observed for phenolic DESs.

Heterogeneity in hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents: SAXS prepeak and local environments

Akshay Malik et al.

Summary: Recent introduction of novel deep eutectic solvents with hydrophobic character and greener starting materials has stimulated researchers to explore their new potential applications. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed the bulk phase morphology of dl-menthol based hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents, indicating strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between menthol-menthol, acid-acid, and menthol-acid molecules. The competition between the hydroxyl groups of acids and menthol to form intermolecular hydrogen bonds plays a significant role in determining the structure of these solvents.
