Multiscale Approach of Spin Crossover Materials: A Concept Mixing Russian Dolls and Domino Effects

Philippe Guionneau et al.

Summary: The concept of multiscale understanding of SCO emphasizes the importance of considering structure-property relationships at different physical scales to fully grasp and take advantage of the phenomenon. This approach expands the range of potential applications, including the development of shape memory materials.

Pressure Tunable Electronic Bistability in Fe(II) Hofmann-like Two-Dimensional Coordination Polymer [Fe(Fpz)2Pt(CN)4]: A Comprehensive Experimental and Theoretical Study

Ruixin Li et al.

Summary: A comprehensive study on the thermal-induced spin transition (TIST) and pressure-induced spin transition (PIST) of a two-dimensional Hofmann-like SCO polymer has been conducted. The analysis of cooperative interactions in TIST and PIST studies was carried out using the theory of elastic interactions and numerical Monte Carlo simulations. A complete phase diagram (T, P) was constructed for the compound, showing a linear dependence of critical temperature on pressure and a nonmonotonic behavior of hysteresis width. The anomalous behavior of hysteresis width under pressure was attributed to a local distortion of the octahedral geometry of Fe(II) centers.

Three Distinct Spin-Crossover Pathways in Halogen-Appended 2D Hofmann Frameworks

Ashley T. Brennan et al.

Summary: In this study, a family of 2D Hofmann-type frameworks with halogen-appended ligands were investigated, revealing that lattice modification through X variation influences the elastic coupling between Fe-II sites and the emergence of ferroelastic or antiferroelastic interactions. The change of X atom characteristics and increased guest molecules in the pores resulted in different types of elastic coupling and multi-step spin-state transitions between Fe1 and Fe2 sites. The decoupling of Fe-II sites due to halogen atom steric bulk led to independent spin-state transitions and two-step pathways.

Mapping the cooperativity pathways in spin crossover complexes

Matthew G. Reeves et al.

Summary: Crystal packing energy calculations are used to analyze a family of spin crossover complexes, revealing a linear relationship between transition abruptness and changes in intermolecular interaction energy in the crystal structures. Abrupt transitions are associated with significant stabilising and destabilising changes in intermolecular interaction energies. Different classes of SCO complexes exhibit varying trends in relation to transition abruptness.
