Berberine Ameliorates Glucose Metabolism in Diabetic Rats through the alpha7 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor-Related Cholinergic Anti-Inflammatory Pathway

Dingkun Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that berberine can reduce fasting blood glucose and insulin levels, and improve insulin resistance in diabetic rats. Berberine achieves this by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase activity, increasing acetylcholine levels in the serum, and upregulating alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor gene expression in the liver tissue, leading to an improvement in inflammation. However, the glucose-lowering and anti-inflammatory effects of berberine are not significant when the expression of the alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor gene is downregulated.
