Efficient high-solids enzymatic hydrolysis of corncobs by an acidic pretreatment and a fed-batch feeding mode

Xue Cai et al.

Summary: This study achieved high-yield hydrolysis of corncob with 25% solids content using different pretreatment methods and fed-batch modes. The optimal feeding mode was found to be a low amount and high frequency mode, resulting in 84.4% glucose yield in 96 hours. This research demonstrates that the combination of optimized pretreatment method and fed-batch mode is favored for industrial-scale high-solids hydrolysis.

Summary: This article reviews the relevant topics to consider when researching XOS productive processes, including raw material selection, production, purification, and evaluation strategies. The lack of consensus on criteria and parameters used in the evaluation of XOS production processes makes comparative analysis between different studies difficult.

Enhanced enzymatic saccharification of sorghum straw by effective delignification via combined pretreatment with alkali extraction and deep eutectic solvent soaking

Mengjia Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that the hydrogen bond donor (HBD) in ChCl-based deep eutectic solvent (DES) had a significant impact on the removal of lignin and xylan during the pretreatment of sorghum straw. By sequentially pretreating with dilute sodium hydroxide and soaking in ChCl:LAC, the enzymatic saccharification efficiency of SS was significantly improved.

Solubilization of hemicellulose and fermentable sugars from bagasse, stalks, and leaves of sweet sorghum

Rodrigo Pagano Martins et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of different treatments on hemicellulose solubilization, xylose and glucose production from sweet sorghum bagasse, stalk, and leaves. Results showed that using 10% NaOH for pretreatment of bagasse and stalks resulted in the most effective hemicellulose solubilization, while biomasses pretreated with 10% H2O2 exhibited high enzymatic hydrolysis yield.

High yield production of nanocrystalline cellulose by microwave-assisted dilute-acid pretreatment combined with enzymatic hydrolysis

Moriko Qian et al.

Summary: A dilute-acid pretreatment assisted with microwave irradiation was developed to efficiently fabricate nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) with the single use of the cellulase from Aspergillus niger. The utilization of microwave heating and diluted sulfuric acid in pretreatment significantly increased the NCC yield, and the conditions of pretreatment affected the crystal dimension of the nanocrystals as well as the thermal stability and crystallinity of the extracted NCC.

Full utilization of sweet sorghum for bacterial cellulose production: A concept of material crop

Qing Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of sweet sorghum biomass as carbon sources for bacterial cellulose production, with promising results obtained from the lignocellulosic parts. The structural properties and tensile strength of bacterial cellulose from these parts were comparable to commercial glucose medium. This work broadens the potential of sweet sorghum as a material crop for bio-based building blocks.

Xylooligosaccharides: prebiotic potential from agro-industrial residue, production strategies and prospects

Aline Vitoria Corim Marim et al.

Summary: Xylooligosaccharides (XOS) are produced from lignocellulosic materials through various methods and have health benefits as prebiotics. Their selective stimulation of beneficial microorganisms and suppression of pathogenic bacteria contribute to their potential industrial applications. The use of enzymatic methods for XOS production is preferred due to milder process conditions and less generation of pollutant residues.
