Common-Mode Current Prediction and Analysis in Motor Drive Systems for the New Frequency Range of 2-150 kHz

Amir Ganjavi et al.

Summary: This article presents a behavioral model of an AC motor to predict the common-mode current in adjustable speed drives (ASDs), and proposes a system modeling strategy for filter design in the frequency range of 2-150 kHz. Real-time experiments validate the accuracy of the introduced model in predicting motor-induced common-mode resonances.

Effects of Current Distortion on DC Link Inductor and Capacitor Lifetime in Variable Frequency Drive Connected to Grid With Active Harmonic Filter

Ramesh Pandurangan et al.

Summary: This research article investigates the distortion effects of dc link inductor and capacitor in variable frequency drives (VFD), with a focus on the impact of shunt active filters (SAF) on grid impedance and harmonic distortion. The study also looks at the high frequency impact on dc link inductor losses. Test results from a 250 kW VFD with SAF are compared with MATLAB simulation. The investigation highlights the importance of considering grid impedance variation on the reliability and lifetime of VFD components.

Grid Frequency Regulation Support From Back-to-Back Motor Drive System With Virtual-Synchronous-Generator-Based Coordinated Control

Daisuke Terazono et al.

Summary: This article introduces a new control scheme utilizing kinetic energy storage to provide frequency regulation support for the power grid and reduce sensitivity to grid voltage imbalance and distortion. The proposed coordinated control between VSG control and motor speed control offers faster frequency support response compared to previous schemes based on frequency measurement.

Interharmonic Emission in AC-DC Converters Exposed to Nonsynchronized High-Frequency Voltage Above 2 kHz

Selcuk Sakar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of supraharmonics on the generation of interharmonics in power systems, showing that devices exposed to a fixed supraharmonic frequency may generate interharmonics when the power system frequency deviates from 50/60 Hz. The frequency and magnitude of interharmonics are determined by three factors: the frequency of the supraharmonic component, the voltage magnitude of that component, and the deviation of the power system frequency from 50/60 Hz. The formation of interharmonics is confirmed in a functional model and validated through measurements and numerical simulations.

A Practical Approach to Model a Cable with Nonlinear Material Characteristics

Amir Ganjavi et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a practical method to model the Common-Mode impedance of power cable in FEA software, which utilizes a reverse-engineering method to estimate frequency-dependent cable material characteristics. Experimental measurements and estimation of material specifications in FEA software are used to calculate cable parameters, demonstrating great accuracy in predicting CM impedance in a wide frequency range. This approach is highly practical and convenient, ensuring high accuracy across different types of power cables.

A Digital Heterodyne 2-To 150-kHz Measurement Method Based on Multiresolution Analysis

Paul S. Wright et al.

Summary: A new frequency decomposition method is introduced for measuring power grid compatibility level in the 2-150 kHz range. The method is based on a tree structure of modular algorithmic elements, providing a 200 Hz resolution. By using heterodyning and down-sampling in modular elements, the algorithm achieves real-time operation and computational efficiency, with test results showing accuracies within +/- 5% of readings.
