On the Capacity Regions of Cloud Radio Access Networks With Limited Orthogonal Fronthaul

Shouvik Ganguly et al.

Summary: Uplink and downlink cloud radio access networks are modeled as two-hop K-user L-relay networks. Inner bounds on the capacity region for uplink and downlink communications are established using simplified versions of network compress-forward and distributed decode-forward. The study shows that while infinite fronthaul link capacities are needed to achieve the fronthaul-unlimited sum-rates exactly, these regions can be approximated with finite-capacity fronthaul.

The Filtered Gaussian Primitive Diamond Channel

Asif Katz et al.

Summary: The study investigates the special case of diamond relay using a combination of CF and DF methods for efficient channel transmission. By optimizing time sharing, the achievable rate is calculated and shows advantages beyond the superposition of CF and DF.

Achievable Rates for the Relay Channel with Orthogonal Receiver Components

Abbas El Gamal et al.

Summary: This paper compares the lower bounds on the capacity of the relay channel with orthogonal receiver components and compares it to existing upper bounds. Additionally, a conjecture regarding the capacity of this subclass of relay channels was disproved.

Modulation Compression in Next Generation RAN: Air Interface and Fronthaul Trade-offs

Sandra Lagen et al.

Summary: Modulation compression is a technique in the Open-RAN framework that reduces fronthaul capacity by decreasing modulation order, with trade-offs on air interface performance, as shown through dynamic multi-cell system-level simulations. Reducing modulation order can achieve significant fronthaul capacity reduction while maintaining air interface performance in different traffic load conditions.
