Bioleaching of Zinc Sulfide Concentrate in Redox-Controlled Fed-Batch Process Compared to Redox Non-controlled Batch Process

Neha Nagar et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the bioleaching of zinc sulfide concentrate in controlled redox potential fed-batch mode to prevent passivation and increase recovery rate. The use of a mixed culture of iron-oxidizing microorganisms dominated with Leptospirillum ferriphilum and the controlled addition of zinc sulfide concentrate with high redox potential resulted in a higher recovery rate compared to the traditional batch mode. This innovative approach reduces cost and improves efficiency in bioleaching.

Catalytic Effect of Graphite Promoting Zn Dissolution from Sphalerite using a Leptospirillum ferrooxidans Dominated Mixed Culture

Sepeideh Ghobadi et al.

Summary: The addition of graphite further enhanced the bio-oxidation efficiency of sphalerite, indicating a bio-catalytic effect and possible galvanic interaction between sphalerite and graphite. The presence of graphite also stabilized the leaching conditions of the system, promoting bacterial activity.

Economic feasibility of the co-production of indium from zinc sulphide using bioleaching extraction in Germany

Nico Irrgang et al.

Summary: Bioleaching is a well-established technique for metal extraction since the 1990s, with the economic feasibility of using suitable process and sulphide concentrates being investigated. The focus is on extracting zinc, copper, and indium from zinc sulphide, with positive net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR) indicating that investment in the bioleaching plant is profitable even at low process volumes.
